From Montego to the Bronx, and now LA, DJ Mark Da Spot's (MDS) career took off after meeting Justin Timberlake while spinning in an upscale and exclusive club in New York.

We're genuinely impressed with your vast industry experience. Could you take us through how Justin Timberlake discovered your music, and how your career took off from there?
I met Justin Timberlake in New York. I use to have a Limo company, and Justin Timberlake became one of my regular clients. He was very interested in my customized cars and I believe that’s what made him a regular customer. But I eventually began to give him my mixtape CDs and also played them when I chauffeured him throughout the city. One day he asked me to DJ an MTV after-party for the music group Nsync.
After DJing that event I became his full-time chauffeur and DJ. We went on tour together and when it was time for Justin Timberlake to move to Los Angeles CA, he asked me to come with him. I became familiar with the Hollywood area and industry, from chauffeuring Justin Timberlake around the city. We worked together for about 8 years and when he pursued his career in acting, I continued Djing and networking on the West Coast and around the world.
We've noticed that you've been granted various awards across the music industry. Is there one award you were given that you're most proud of, and why?
Winning the Global Spin Award “Best West Coast DJ of The Year” 3x consecutively is a great accomplishment that I am proud of. It is always a great feeling to be acknowledged for your hard work, and I appreciate the Global Spin Awards for recognizing me as the best club DJ on the west coast for 3 consecutive years. And honestly, I appreciate anyone who takes the time out to award me. All good DJs deserve to be acknowledged and recognized for making people feel good through music.
We've heard that you've had a residency at various notable clubs. What advice could you give to aspiring DJs about how to solidly a residency? How did you work your way up to various residences?
Well, you have to be a good DJ. Spend time mastering your craft and understand you will improve with time. Once you are confident with your skills, begin networking in your city. Throughout your career, you will have to do some events pro bono just to get your foot in the door to network and build relationships. Working a residency requires you to perform well on a consistent basis, so continue to practice and learn even when you feel like you are the best. Also, promote yourself! I take pride in promoting myself and my brand and I believe it helped me get to where I am today. If you truly believe in yourself then anything is possible. Once you have that firm belief in your vision, you will become unstoppable.
From working with many notable artists, groups, and producers, is there anything you've taken away from these experiences that helped your knowledge of the industry expand?
I worked with so many successful and inspiring artists and producers throughout my career. Every artist/producer I have worked with taught me directly, or indirectly that hard work and dedication is the key to stay afloat in this music industry. It may look easy from the outside, but people that I know in this music industry are hard-working individuals. Just like in any other profession, you have to work to climb the ladder.
What has been keeping you inspired this year?
My biggest support system is my family and they keep me going. I just purchased a property with my fiancée and I am excited to see what the future holds for us. Being around family and friends who love and uplift you is how I stay positive during 2020. God continues to answer my prayers and I show my appreciation by remaining grateful and inspired to keep going.
