Are you able to share with our readers what first got you so passionate about music?
My dad is a musician and I grew up listening to him play guitar every day and singing in his worship band at church on Sundays. The biggest moment for me was when I auditioned for Annie at our local summer stock theatre. I walked into the room, stood in front of the directors and refused to sing. I just stopped and said I wasn’t going to do it. Needless to say, I didn’t get the part. I remember being devastated when my parents took me to see the show and I realized what I was missing. After that, I couldn’t get enough of auditioning and performing!
“Your Love” hit us to our very core with your vocal performance. Do you find it comes effortlessly to fill your voice with such soul and passion?
I express myself so much easier when I’m singing and it helps that what I am singing about really matters to me. When I was growing up, I would get a lot of “Your a voice is so beautiful” then go on to describe it as raspy, deep, low, and different. It took me years to accept my voice and be able to listen to recordings of myself. I wanted to be like all the Broadway and Popstars on the radio but I never sounded that way. My voice has always defined by others until I really learned how to love and embrace my sound and let it flow.
As a song that presents itself as a pleading love song, was it hard for you to write/record “Your Love”?
When you write music you never know how it is going to be perceived or how people will relate to it. This song for me is really about having that intimate connection with someone. Maybe it’s someone you don’t expect to fall for but it’s something that you trust right away. I was so pumped to bring this song to life! Love should be fun and exciting; It shouldn’t stress you out or cause drama and I wanted the song and the beat to reflect that.
Do you feel that your music is an accurate depiction of your life? Do you feel ultimately connected to your listeners through your music?
My music comes from real experiences that I’ve been through. So if you’re feeling connected to the words that I’m singing and the melody that’s playing, that’s a real authentic connection to my life and where I come from.
Can you describe how your performances feel? Do you enjoy live shows, or do you prefer the actual songwriting process? Also, any solo live shows coming up in the near future?
The stage really is my home. It’s where I feel the most comfortable and have the most fun. I want my performance to be as fun and rewarding as it is for myself on stage. If you know me, you know I love throwing parties and that is what I try to bring the stage every performance.
You can catch me and my band FAM with Michael Kraun at Pianos in New York City on November 2nd! Ticket links are on my website www.awalmusic.info.
