Welcome to BuzzMusic Meagan! We’re really happy to be featuring your song “Vice”. It’s very catchy, but also incorporates an integral message within. Can you explain to our readers the truth that is embedded within the track?
The intention I had when writing this song was to give hope to others that even though you may feel like you’ll never find the right person, and they all end in hurt, it all pays off in the end when your time finally comes, the wait is over, and all of those hurts prepared you for finding true happiness. When you find that person, you feel invincible and ready to take on the world. Nothing can stop you when you’re together, because love makes all things possible.
We’re always curious to learn more about how bands form! How did Jet Set Future officially come to fruition? Did you know the other band members prior to creating the band?
One day I got a Facebook message from this guy “E.J.” He said he was hanging out with a mutual friend when he told him he should ask me to start a band because E.J. really wanted one. I had never been in a band before but I wanted to go for it. E.J. recruited a guitarist, Mike, who he admired when he saw him playing in another band. When Mike joined, he said he had to have his partner in crime, Ben, who has played in every band with him. When everyone agreed to meet, despite all having different musical backgrounds, it seemed to mesh really well. 2 years later we wanted to add a second guitarist. I immediately thought of my friend George, who performed in A Cappella groups with me in high school, because he was always showing interest and enthusiasm in my band. I always told him he would be the first to know if we were ever to add a second guitarist. And he was. 📷
Who has had the biggest influence on your life musically thus far? Can you describe the impact this particular individual has had in terms of your new song “Vice”?
Although my biggest influence in music is Lana Del Rey, she did not influence this song. My favorite genre of music is 90’s Alternative Girl Rock. I wanted to write “Vice” like it was a 90’s song you were just discovering, so it felt like new. Nina Gordon and Louise Post of “Veruca Salt” inspired my vocal style and melody the most in this song. I wanted to write an energizing song, like their song “Volcano Girls” was, which was the first song I heard in this genre that made me realize how much I loved it. It’s symbolic that the first inspiring song I heard, inspired our first single off our first album.
What are some of your ultimate goals as a group? Are any of these goals currently being put into place/being worked on?
Our biggest goal as a group is to expand. We want to expand the places we play, the songs we write, the people we meet and the places we go. We believe life is for the taking and music is our tool to experiencing the best of what life has to offer. In a society of division and labels, music can still gather a group of strangers to a venue, and find that they all have something in common. We believe music unites people, and we are honored to be able to contribute to that.
We have no doubt you can handle yourself Meagan, but what's it like working with the self-proclaimed "Rowdy Boys" and bandmates of Jet Set Future?
Being in a band is like being in a group marriage. Everyone needs to feel heard, accommodated and appreciated. Everyone makes choices together, and everyone needs to be in agreement, or the marriage will fall apart. If this is hard for just a couple, imagine 5. But 3 years later, we’re still here going strong. Despite having to be the only advocate of the female perspective, and even when they don’t understand, we all respect each other enough to compromise, and that’s what makes any partnership work. Whether it’s a marriage, a friendship, or a band, respecting each other and learning to compromise is the most important thing in making a good thing last.
It was great having you here on BuzzMusic! Tell us more about what's next for you after this song release? Any shows in the near future?!
We are excited to soon be releasing our first album. We couldn’t be luckier to have it being recorded and engineered by our bassist, Ben. This allows us to make this album completely genuine. No input from any outside sources outside of the band. This album is 100% us. We are proud to be apologetically ourselves and only write straight from the heart. We can’t wait to share ourselves and our musical message with the world.
