From the suburbs of Chicago, IL Grant Milliren is an indie singer/songwriter who started
playing shows, open mics, and other live shows frequently from 2014-2016. Milliren would eventually be signed to STU records in 2017 after playing several shows in his hometown of Naperville. Milliren just released his new LP “The little things” after having a summer tour and playing at music festivals.
A sort of coming of age song “Racetrack” has a theme of coming back home or finding
your way back to yourself and where you came from. A touching subject especially for those of us who are in the stage of life where going back to where we are from will bring some peace. An upbeat tempo meets the listener’s ears along with an interesting easy sound that isn’t very melodic but quite musical in the way it is catchy but not in the usual “pop formula” way. This track has a really cool instrumental with massive energy in his vocals. It is well composed and it feels genuine. Altogether a great track to put on your new music playlist!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers? Can you give us a brief history of your musical career?
Of course! My name is Grant Milliren, indie rock singer-songwriter from the suburbs of Chicago, IL. I am currently signed by STU Records of Illinois State University and currently a junior at Illinois State. I received my first guitar in the sixth grade and played in a few bands in high school as a
drummer. Throughout that time, I was always writing my own music outside of drumming. Then I fully indulged as a singer-songwriter and never looked back. It was my calling.
How did you come up with your name? Is there a meaning behind it?
Funny enough, I was actually born with the name so luckily the name came up with itself! But, the reason I went with my real name and not under a stage name like some artists do is because I want to be recognized for who I am at heart.
Do you write your own music? Can you tell us a bit about your writing style?
Yes, I do write my own music! My writing style really consists of a lot of self reflection, cynicism, wishful thinking, and passion. I never sit down to intentionally write. I always rehearse new tunes that I’ve written (in this case, my new album “The Little Things”) or covers and then start to mess around with new sounds to get the creative juices flowing. Then, that’s when the fun really starts to happen. I love writing more than anything.
We’re really into your new song! Can you tell us a bit about it? Where did the inspiration behind the song come from?
Thank you so much! It makes me really happy to hear you guys are listening and enjoying my music. “Racetrack” is a song about finding your way back to sanity, simple thinking, and about sticking true to who you know. This song is incredibly special to me because it came out of thin air.
The inspiration came from a rut I was sunk in. I couldn’t write for a two-three week period and it frustrated the hell out of me. Then one day after messing around with some earthy and twinkly chords, it all fell into place and became a big part of my record.
What’s next for you?
I have some big goals for the rest of 2018 and many more goals for 2019. The release of “The Little Things” and touring the Midwest this summer were two of the biggest goals I had. I am currently finishing up booking my fall dates so it should be an entertaining October/November and potentially going to be doing a music video. Within that time, I will be promoting the new record not only by playing shows but by doing the grunt work.
