Welcome To BuzzMusic! How do you mix your vintage sound to make it both relevant and contemporary?
Thank you! I think it was accidental, but completely worked to our advantage. It came from a friendly tug-of-war between members of the band that are into somewhat more current music and other members, like myself, that are trying to keep the old school alive.
Where did your musical journey begin? How would you say your sound or your creative and professional approach has evolved over time?
My musical journey began in Guadalajara, Jalisco during my early teens. I came from a family of musicians (on both sides!). Performing with professional bands, which consisted of my family members, gave me the proper “training wheels” to begin writing my own music and eventually become the frontman of a band. As the years went on I became more aware of what is needed to survive in the concrete jungle of LA as a musical artist. I also became more focused and determined on getting results. Less rock star, more business-like mentality. Creatively, I was continuously inspired by my other bandmates and other musicians I met at Pierce College, where I am now attending to get my bachelors in music.
If someone could only listen to one out of your collection, what song would you suggest and why?
I would say Tierra Lejana. I feel like that is the song that best represents who I am. It talks about the sentiments that I experienced as an immigrant, leaving it all behind in search of a better future. I know that is the song that truly tugs at the heart of others in similar situations or someone they might know going through the same hardships. Considering this country is made up of immigrants, that makes it a lot of people!
What are some challenges you faced as up and coming artists? How have you overcome those challenges?
One challenge has always been “paying our dues” and proving ourselves. As artists in L.A., we live in a culture where musicians must, to a certain degree, be exploited before getting into the prestigious venues and shows. Doing pay-to-play and that kind of thing. We had to put up with a lot of that before people truly started giving us a chance and started realizing our worth. And now, we are finally starting to reap the benefits of all the hard work and sacrifices made.
What’s the best thing that could happen for King Sol & the Vibes in the next twelve months?
The best thing that could happen to us ,in general, would be that we continue to receive the love and support of our amazing fans, the Vibeaholics, and for that to expand and reach new people all across the board: all ages, genders, nationalities, etc. The message we deliver is ultimately that of all the greats who came before us: A message of love, truth and freedom!
