Katie Dauson Talks About New Album, ‘Fool’s Gold’

Welcome to Buzz, Katie! What a ride you've taken us on with your recent album, Fool's Gold. What inspired you to write this story-like album?

Thank you. The way I wrote the album wasn't a conscious decision. I wanted to write a Country album for a while, and originally, this wasn't going to be a Country album. However, the deeper I got into writing and recording it, the more I realized that Fool's Gold would be just that. I don't pre-plan any album; I just write what comes to me.

Which song from the album Fool's Gold is your personal favorite and why? What makes that song stand out to you?

It would have to be Galactic Buckaroo. I really enjoy this song because of all the pop culture and science references I made, and because I did something I hadn't done before: I rapped!

How is Fool's Gold different from your previous three albums? What does this album have that the others don't?

Fool's Gold is a pure Country album. Some of my previous albums have Country songs, but they aren't full-on Country. Also, there's a song on this album that I used a new instrument on. I played a banjo on the song Blue. I had never played or recorded with a banjo, so that was different.

Did you work with any producers, musicians, or artists when creating the album Fool's Gold? Who helped you bring this project to life?

I always work with my engineer/producer, James Nickle, on all my work. I write the songs, and he helps me bring them to life. He makes recording a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

What do you hope listeners feel and take away after hearing Fool's Gold? What emotions or thoughts did you want to leave them with?

I just want to bring a little bit of joy to my listeners' days. It's not about me; it's about my listeners.
