Welcome back to BuzzMusic Labán’! It’s such a pleasure to be chatting with you again. "Quién da Más" is the perfect track to introduce new listeners to your sound in 2019. Where did you draw inspiration for this particular track?
Thank you for having me, the pleasure is mine. I wrote this song when I was in college, I was not happy with what I was doing and where my professional life was going, I graduated in business management and industrial engineering and I knew it was the best thing for me to do at that moment, but I still felt caged and frustrated and that led me to write this song.
“Acércate” is a great new track but it seems to have a meaningful message behind the lyrics. Can you tell us more about your most recent release?
It is a song about a short but passionate relationship. the one you can't stop thinking about once it ends, you want more but it can't happen at the time because there are other emotional commitments. I really enjoyed working on this song, it features a collaboration with tenor saxophonist Jeff Miguel from Denver. In terms of the lyrics, "Acércate cuando no tengas deudas" means "Get closer when you're not in debt", figuratively of course (or not, haha).
Since you’ve been making music for several years, how would you compare some of the earlier material you’ve written to your newest release?
I've been learning a lot about the process of songwriting and then producing the song. At first, I think I was really following the guidelines in terms of the classic song structure, verses and choruses, I still am, but I've started to loosen up and I will continue to experiment beyond that. I've always liked the experimental vibe and although there are songs on the album with a very traditional structure, there's also a sense of experimental that seems to be developed across the songs and the order I worked on them.
Since your debut music video garnered an incredible amount of success, do you have plans to drop another video for any of your new tracks?
Yes, I'm working on that, I would like to present more videos from this album's universe. I'm also working on a series of short animation videos "En las nubes" (In the clouds) where I share some thoughts on the social problems we face today and their possible solutions. The topics are development, safety, education, diversity and inclusion among other ones. The first chapter was released a few weeks ago and the second one is coming soon. Those can be found on my social networks or YouTube Channel.
How have you honed your songwriting style over time, and what do you think are the main qualities that make a song truly connect and last in the long-run?
I think that the key is to stay true to what makes you feel the strongest emotions, capture that and write about it. It is very likely that someone else went or is going through that same thing and therefore is meaningful to them. If the message or the story is musically delivered in a way that pleases the ear, then it truly connects and lasts in the long-run because it makes both people's minds and bodies come in sync.
Thank you so much for chatting with us. What can you tell us about your much-anticipated debut album “Todos Somos Duenos de Aqui”?
There are still some really interesting tunes for you to listen, I'm really excited, I think it tells a story as a whole, it finishes with an overture and acts as a letter of presentation of what I am and what to expect from Labán, I'm still working on the finishing touches but I'm very excited about its release, which I will be announcing soon. Thank you!
