One Step Closer is an acoustic duo hailing from Los Angeles, California! Have you ever pictured what it would sound like if Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande collaborating on a mellifluous sweet acoustic melody together? That’s exactly what One Step Closer delivered with their latest hit “I Do”.
"I Do" is a perfect love bop delivered to us by a duo who displayed great musical chemistry within one another. I really love the falsetto notes in the song. I’ve always been a big fan of those with big ranges who can take a note from chest to head. To top it off, they both have individual voices that fuse so well together. The ending of “I do” was incredibly sensational. They went a slightly different approach with fabricated and more augmented finishing to a tune that was so delightful for the entire duration. You can tell One Step Closer spends meticulous effort and time into their craft. One Step Closer has the ability to precisely and effortlessly deliver a song which is absolutely incredible. We can't wait to see what's next from this powerhouse duo.

Hi One Step Closer! Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Estefania Padilla and I’m a Chicana Singer-Songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. Growing up, music has always been at the center of my world. From family gatherings, to religious and school events, music was my escape and the way I chose to interpret my reality. After studying Psychology and Communication at Cal State Northridge, I fell in love with the art of songwriting and how it perfectly blended my passions together, singing from the soul and writing from the fire in your heart. Since then, Miky Tayoba and I have been blending not only our voices, but our skills, passions, perspectives, and aspirations together to form, One Step Closer.
My name is Miky Tayoba and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I grew up in a big Filipino family that loved to dance and sing karaoke at every holiday party. I graduated from California State University, Northridge with my Bachelors in Music Media and Commercial Composition and currently teach music at schools around Los Angeles. I've been writing and performing music since grade school while participating in choirs, bands, and any musical production I could get my hands on. After multiple garage bands and singing groups, I created One Step Closer with my musical partner, Estefania Padilla, and have been experiencing this crazy artistic journey since!
How did you two meet? when did you decide to form a musical duo together?
We met at California State University, Northridge in the A Capella group called CSUN Acasola. After we both graduated from college in 2016 and were no longer in an organized singing group, we both were looking for a musical outlet where we could express ourselves just as passionately and creatively. It wasn’t too long till we started collaborating ourselves through covers and jam sessions where we naturally found ourselves writing our own original music. Together, as great friends and business partners, we formed One Step Closer as a way to continue our musical endeavors and discover our collective sound as an acoustic duo.
What inspired the name “One Step Closer”?’
One Step Closer is a fundamental motto we both live by and a way to positively make sense of life’s ultimate obstacles. When things get hard, it’s so easy to be blinded by doubt and feel stuck with no direction to go. But by recognizing this idea of moving forward, we embraced the concept that any incremental effort towards a desired destination can in fact get you closer and closer to where you want to be.
How has the journey been so far while creating music together?
This journey has been nothing less than a gratifying experience filled with many surprises, emotional rollercoasters, humbling opportunities, reality checks, and challenges that push us to reach our upmost potential as individuals and as a band.
I think you really have the ability to become a mainstream act and there’s not many duos in the limelight currently, do you guys plan on achieving that? Or do you guys enjoy the indie music scene?
At the end of the day, our ultimate goal with our music is to connect with others and share our songs and stories with as many people as possible who care to listen. Whether that direction be in the indie music scene or as a mainstream act, as long as that path leads us to be our most authentic selves and inspires us to create content that we are proud to share with the world, then that’s where our music will live.
How would you describe the type of music you create?
Like every artist, our music is a fusion of our influences, but both individually and collectively including Whitney Houston, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, Stevie Wonder, and much more. Our love of stripped down vocals, pop influenced hooks, R&B vibes, and the stories that make us feel human can pour into our music at any moment of our songwriting process. We also love silky harmonies, vulnerable melodies, and vocal dynamics, that give our sound its smooth and reflective feel.
What can we expect from you in 2019?
In 2019, you can expect new music in the form of singles as well as performing at new venues near you. We also plan to incorporate more visual art and collaborate with other creatives who are on the same path of passion and positivity in our musically journey.
