Megan Elise Kelly who goes by the stage name ‘Megan Elise’ released a cool and ultra modern song titled “Give It Back” that will be a pleasurable and delightful musical ear-worm for not only her current fans but her new fans as well! It has a truly melodic flow to it and a catchy hook that’s gonna be addictive for people to listen to repetitively. The beat is intricate with a classic dance-electronic sound that can take you into an older era of music. The song is fun and danceable with relatable lyricism that people can enjoy in various settings. It’s definitely marketable to also be played in mainstream television and film.
Despite my favorite element of this single being the eclectic and vintage pop grooves displayed in the instrumental backtrack, her voice is genuinely settling and floats effortlessly on top of the electronic track. It shows great precision and subtle effort in the time and dedication spent on her vocals. Megan Elise has always a superb lyricist and songwriter. She began her songwriting journey in junior high which transcended all the way to her adult years where she has written music for TV, film, and advertising spots.
Megan Elise wanted to create music for herself and her own artistry and she did a smashing job with “Give It Back” . Listen to "Give It Back" here and check out our exclusive interview with Megan Elise below!
Hi Megan! It's great to chat with you! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
It’s great to chat with you too! I love what you guys are doing at Buzz Music LA, and I have made some great musical discoveries through your work, so thank you! But anyway, my name is Megan Elise and I am a songwriter and musician from NYC.
Can you give us a brief history of your musical career?
Well, I started taking violin lessons right around my 5th birthday, and I’ve loved music ever since. Around 7th or 8th grade I realized that I wanted to sing, and I started writing songs, but I couldn’t accompany myself with just the violin, so I taught myself guitar and drums. Music has always just been the best release for me. Sometimes I feel like I am better at communicating through music! In high school, I was playing shows in local bars almost every week in the Greater Philadelphia area where I grew up. (Never needed a fake ID when I was underage, because my guitar on my back did the trick!) I would play primarily cover songs at first, and then sprinkle in some original music during sets. After a while, I started getting requests for more originals. A few years ago, I put out a full-length album, and while I still really love a few of the songs, the entirety of the album just didn’t feel like me. I’ve been on a bit of a journey to find my own sound since then, and it’s this reason that I am so excited about the new music I’ve been working on. After pairing up with Nashville producer, Ryan Corn, I feel like I’ve re-discovered my voice. Ryan has taken all of my ideas and helped to make them reality. I think the musical chemistry we have really comes through the finished tracks.
Do you write your own music? Can you tell us a bit about your writing style?
Yes! I write my own music. These days, I do a lot of writing for others and/or for TV/film projects with specific needs, but I could never stop writing my own songs. Sometimes the words just fall out of me. My writing style is kind of like storytelling. There is usually a human element that’s relatable in some way. I try to take a feeling or an emotion and then build sounds around to create an experience for listeners.
Love the new song "Give It Back". Can you tell us a bit about it?
Thank you so much! There is no greater compliment than when someone says they enjoy my music. ‘Give it Back’ is pretty special for me. It tells the story of someone going through an unexpected break up, and figuring out how to pick up the pieces and move on again. The challenge is that their ex still has their heart, so moving on is difficult.
Where did the inspiration behind the song come from?
Earlier this year I went through a break up myself! It’s the first time I’ve ever had my heartbroken. I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with this person, but things changed and I had to move on. The song has been part of a healing process for me.
What are some challenges you faced along the way of creating the song?
Well, writing about something so real can be a tough. The emotions are so present and raw, and I think often times it’s human nature to just box up pain and put it away. Talking about it or thinking about it can be difficult, but I think people create the best art when they are open to being truly vulnerable. ‘Give it Back,’ as well as my next single ‘I Tried’ (not released yet) were difficult to work on because they really capture the emotional journey I’ve been going through. Music is the best when it’s the truth, though, and I hope these tracks help others the way they’ve helped me heal.
Who are your top musical inspirations who have influences you in creating your music?
My all-time favorite group is HAIM. I am the oldest of six kids, and my two sisters also sing. (They’re better than me!) So, watching the HAIM girls become so successful has been truly inspirational. Other influences include Fleetwood Mac, The Corrs, Lykke Li, and Dagny. But recently, I have absolutely loved supporting other local up and coming artists. Two Brooklyn based favs include VERITE and TOMI. (I love strong, fierce female-fronted indie bands!) If you haven’t checked out their music yet, please do!
What’s next for Megan Elise?
Great question! I plan on continuing this great adventure, and following wherever the music takes me. Ryan and I are working on a few more songs that I plan to release as an EP by the end of the year. In the meantime, I am teaming up with some extremely talented local musicians to put a show together, and I am so excited to get back out and start performing this music. I’ve taken a break from live shows to focus on writing, so it’ll be like a homecoming of sorts to get back on a stage. I am also working on music for an independent film that will be brilliant. More to come on that in the upcoming months!
