The most iconic bands are groups consisting of people who know each other far to well, that have a deep connection. Take the Jackson Five for example. Five brothers who know each others strengths and flaws, were able to excel in the music industry effortlessly. I don’t think that will be any different for indie music duo "The Keymakers" who formed in late 2017 consisting of two brothers, Jerome and Justin. Justin fell in love with the sound of electronic music and EDM production at an early age. Jerome, drifted more towards the pop/R&B side of things with a background training in instrumental jazz. It wasn’t until they graduated college that they decided to join forces and become the musical icons that they know they are destined to be. They released their debut single "Good For You" and have since then racked up over a million plays across all streaming platforms from their first three releases!
The Keymakers newest single "Tell Me Something" won’t be any different in contributing to the success of this duo. The song is a hit. Perfect rhythmical single that could be played in clubs and across radio stations around the country. You have the sudden urge to dance and groove along with the music as soon as it comes on. The vocals are really great! The singer has a really current sound and a sauve voice. He has the perfect blend of pop and R&B that complements this track with an EDM flare. He’s able to take his notes up to a falsetto which the ladies love. The beat is my favorite. It has many layers to it but it’s marketable for the current music industry. It’s perfectly fitting in the era that is Today. The let loose, have fun and enjoy the satisfaction of life and love era. This song is aesthetically pleasing to the ears! What I really enjoyed is that if you’re really focused on the beat you can the drum kicks in the beginning which were really cool. The song will make you want to go on a fun adventure and just enjoy living in the moment. Check it out for yourself and see if it gives you that same feeling!
We are huge fans of The Keymakers and we had the chance to learn more about how the group came together, the inspiration and process in creating "Tell Me Something". Listen to "Tell Me Something" here. #BuzzMusicExclusive
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We’d love to! We’re brothers Rome and Red and we call ourselves The Keymakers! We live in an apartment Boston and make music together. The two of us (and our awesome older sister!) grew up together in Pittsburgh and moved away for school in St. Louis (Rome) and Indiana (Red).
Can you give us a brief history of your musical career?
Both of our musical careers began very early in our lives. Our mom had all of her children take piano lessons as we were growing up so that was really our foundation. After stopping the lessons, Rome picked up the saxophone, which he studied for years, and Justin picked up the guitar.
Going forward, Rome started uses his vocals as an instrument and writing and composing his own music while away at college. With this, he launched his first project Rome Alexander. Justin, on the other hand, fell in love with the world of electronic dance music and EDM production while in high school. This led him to DJing and producing remixes for other artists. Although it seems like an obvious realization, it wasn’t until 2016 that we figured out how well our skills complemented each other and after four collaborations in our old projects, we decided to join forces as The Keymakers.
How did you come up with your name? Is there a meaning behind it?
There’s a few different meanings baked into the name actually, but probably the biggest one: we’re big movie fans and when we were growing up, our favorite movie was the Matrix - The Keymaker is our favorite character from the trilogy. We draw a parallel between what he could do with keys to what we’re trying to do with our music and each individual song - take people to different places and unique experiences.
Do you write your own music? Can you tell us a bit about your writing style?
Yes, we write all of our own music! In terms of our style, it really depends from song to song - we try not to get too formulaic with how we approach a song. Sometimes, it starts with a line, and then the music and overall concept grow from there. Sometimes, it starts with a note or a chord progression. With every song though, the writing goes through multiple edits, drafts, and tweaks until we get it to a place where we feel we’ve told the right story and captured the essence of how we imagine the song.
We’re really into your new song "Tell Me Something"! Can you tell us a bit about it?
Yes! ‘Tell Me Something’ is our brand new track and we’re so excited that it’s finally out. The track is a glimpse into a more urban sound from us than our listeners are used to hearing. The track combines electronic vibes, R&B inspiration all on top of a undeniable clubby urban sound. A big mix of inspirations, which if you know us, is totally our thing!
Where did the inspiration behind "Tell Me Something" come from?
To criminally over simplify this, when it comes to inspiration, there are two types of tracks. There’s the track that you have inside you, a melody, a concept, and emotion, and you go into the studio to get that music out of your head, we’ll call that internal inspiration. These kind of tracks can change direction 1000 times before you’re done with them. Then there is external inspirations, when a track itself leads the path more than the artists, the artist just has to be the vessel, the song is the captain. “Tell Me Something’ definitely falls into the second category. From start to finish, the track almost assembled itself. We were lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented artists in the studio throughout this project and their skill really shows.
What are three things you’d love your fans to know about you?
We love meeting and connecting with our fans and would love to hear your stories - follow us on Instagram (@TheKeymakers) or Facebook and let’s get to know each other!
In addition to being movie guys, we’re big into sports and are die hard Saints fans.
Our goal with our music is to take our listeners on a journey and take them into our world - and that world is never the same from song to song. We will always stay true to ourselves while trying to keep our fans guessing and captivated by each new release.
Any upcoming shows? For someone who hasn’t seen you live yet, how would you describe your performance?
Our performance is a mix between a live show and a DJ set. Our goal on stage is to take our guests on a journey and capture all of the emotions we try to put into our music. We want people to dance, sing, laugh, cry, and jump throughout our whole show! That’s an ambitious goal we have but we know it can be done because of some of the incredible shows and inspiring artists we’ve seen in the past. To us, music is the most powerful thing in the world because it can affect people so deeply and universally, we want our sets to be good examples of that.
What’s next for you?
Releasing more music and performing! We’ve got our next song, Insomniac, coming out the day before Halloween (October 30th) and we’re really excited to share that one with our fans. It’s a bit of a spooky track so we think it’s fitting. We’ll be putting out a bunch more music before the end of the year and we think it’ll really show people more of the unique sound that we’re trying to develop - and we can’t wait to play these songs live. Catch us at a local show in Boston or Pittsburgh or follow us on Songkick to see when we’ll be coming to you in 2019!
