Vybhav Jagannath is a 20-year old Indian-American upcoming singer-songwriter. He started singing at the age of 3 and transitioned from Indian Classical music to English music. As a freshman, he started an A Cappella group at the University of South Florida, by the name of EnsemBULL. Vybhav has been doing covers of various Pop and R&B songs since he was 13 years old. At the end of 2017, he started writing and recording original music starting with his first original single "Resurrection" which eventually turned into his first full-length album, "Young Enough To Know Better" which came out in November 2018. He hopes to use his recording platform as a way to share his cultural roots with the American industry and express his passion for mental health advocacy through his music.
His single “Resurrection” was the most idiosyncratic single I’ve heard in my recent days. The song starts off with a mystery noting the hip-hop beat that leaves you under assumption of what the song is going to be, however it leads into a completely new direction once Vybhav starts serenading us with his classic R&B voice and head resonance that can even transition into a smooth-sailing falsetto! Showing characteristics of pop in his hook, he completely shocks us once he delivers his individualistic dope flow, rapping to his hip-hop beat. I will categorize this song as ‘trap-pop’ something different, refreshing, and certainly not new but certainly under-appreciated in music!
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello! My name is Vybhav, but my friends call me VJ. I am a 20 year old Indian American aspiring singer / songwriter. I enjoy all music related activities and I am currently focusing on putting out a plethora of musical projects with different collaborations.
Can you give us a brief history of your musical career?
I started singing when I was 3 years old. My grandmother on my mother’s side is a world-renowned Indian classical singer, and she trained me in Indian classical music. In eighth grade, I joined my middle school chorus and started singing English music for the first time! Since then, I participated in chorus in high school, led A Cappella teams in high school and currently in college, and I am now working on writing, composing and singing my own music.
How did you come up with your name? Is there a meaning behind it?
VJ is a combination of my initials! My artist name, MusicMan, is a shortened form of vjdamusicman, which started off as just my Instagram handle but has transpired into so much more. When I started writing hip hop music with my younger brother, I came up with a musical persona by the name of MusicMan. MusicMan is his own kind of superhero, and I totally look to him for courage and strength in my own life, on-stage and off-stage.
Do you write your own music? Can you tell us a bit about your writing style?
I do write my own music! My writing style is super unconventional. I start by recording a melody that I hear inside my head on my voice notes app! After this, I write down potential lyrics in my notes app! I usually combine these two files and end up writing a whole song. I try to marinate in my feelings and place my heart and soul into each song I create, and I definitely use writing as a coping method!
We really love your new song! Can you tell us a bit about it?
Resurrection is such a special song to me. It was the first original song that I ever truly gave a voice to, and I mean that literally and metaphorically. I started writing down lyrical ideas for my music in May 2017, but it wasn’t until February 2018 that I actually recorded my vocal idea to enhance the lyrics that were hidden away on my phone.
Where did the inspiration behind the song come from?
Resurrection represents my initial writing style (and I say this because my writing style today is a bit different). My initial writing style entailed placing myself into the mind of a current artist that I really looked up to and resonated with. Resurrection was written for a Nicki Minaj feature which is why the rap portion of the song is so reminiscent of her style! Likewise, other songs on my first album, Young Enough To Know Better, are the voices of myself mixed in with other popular artists. Today, I write entirely using my voice and my opinions, but I just love to look at Resurrection as my first single, but also as a point of growth comparatively!
What are three things you’d love your fans to know about you?
I would love for my fans to know that I am unapologetic about my roots. Growing up, I never had an Indian American musician to look up to in the English industry, and I would love to eventually become that person for many young children of various backgrounds. I want my fans to know that mental health is important and that I am a humongous advocate for it! A lot of my music deals with things that I pick up on from my own surroundings, meaning that I tend to really resonate with my friends successes and struggles. I love having one-on-one conversations with my friends and I like to think of my songs as one-on-one conversations between me and my fans. Lastly, I want my fans to know that I will always work hard to present new content for them because my heart and soul truly only function when I am writing, singing, and recording my life experiences.
Any upcoming shows? For someone who hasn’t seen you live yet, how would you describe your performance?
Currently, I am planning a tour for my first album. I never fully got to present this content in a live manner for my fans, and I have so many ideas to make it happen, so a tour is definitely on my agenda! Additionally, my fans can regularly catch me performing across Raleigh, NC and Tampa, FL because those are two locations where I currently spend the majority of my life! I constantly keep my followers updated about performances through my Instagram, so follow me at @vjdamusicman to hear about the latest information!
What’s next for you?
Like I said, I am ALWAYS pumping out new content. My followers will never be hungry, and I won’t ever continue with one exact theme or idea musically! I love to change up my flow to enhance my creativity, and I do this by working on multiple different projects at a single time. My second full length project is complete, and I also have a Christmas album full of original tracks on the way very soon! I am so excited to finally have my music out there. All I can really say is, get ready for vjdamusicman, because it’s only upward and onward from here!
