Hey Nick! Can you tell us about your childhood and what really sparked your creativity?
Well, I grew up in a very musical family. My aunts and uncles were always floating around in various bands and my grandfather had been playing music for over 50 years. I got started around age 15 when my grandfather gave me his coveted Martin D18 Acoustic Guitar. I had always been creative, but the musical spark was lit by receiving that guitar. I wanted to write something with it and make him proud, you know?
How long have you been singing/performing?
I’ve been playing music both privately and for crowds for about 10 years. I’ve never really been a permanent part of an act aside from a brief stint in a punk bank. I’ve mostly spent this time developing my craft and receiving feedback from friends, strangers at parties, etc.
What is “Black Mamba” about? What inspired it?
“Black Mamba,” in a literal sense, is about a girl I met when I was 15/16. I had just broken up with my first girlfriend and this girl, “Black Mamba,” approached me with her dark, black hair. We got to talking and she ended up seducing me. More metaphorically, the song is about how love always trumps lust and how you should watch out for those folks who would take advantage of you.
What’s your writing process look like?
My writing process is typically one of instant inspiration. Although I can sit down and write out a song at will, the ones that I always end up liking the most sort of just “popped” into my head. On my upcoming EP, there’s a track titled “Stickman Stomp.” I had spent 5 days without sleeping and fell asleep on the ground at a park. When I woke up, the song was stuck in my head so I ran home to write it. The insanity I was feeling at that time is very evident in the song.
What can we expect from your new EP?
This EP is intended to show my growth emotionally and musically. Titled “10 Years,” it’s a collection of songs written between 15-25 years old. “Black Mamba “being the oldest and “Just Dogs” being the newest. Although it only has 4 tracks, each track is VERY different. I’ve even found it hard to identify a genre for my act because of it! Some of it rocks out a bit, other parts are more relaxing and mellow. At the very least, I hope that every listener can find at least one track that appeals to them, don’t be discouraged if you don’t like the first one you hear! They are all very different.
