Yhung Sky Gives An Exclusive Look Into Her EP "Concrete JungleFlower"
Updated: Feb 11
Welcome to BuzzMusic Yhung Sky! Talk to us about your stage name. What’s the story behind “Yhung Sky”?
Thank you for having me! My stage name came from a combination of a high school nickname that started with “Yhung”, and “Sky”, which was what my paternal grandmother wanted my middle name to be. I consider my father’s journey & upbringing in music as the biggest reason why I’m a musician today. Spirit spoke to me during a meditation a few years ago and affirmed it—I saw & heard millions of fans chanting “Yhung Sky” in a sold-out stadium. It was sealed in that moment.
You have some huge accomplishments, congrats! What was it like pursuing a Bachelor in English and Psychology all while honing your musical career?
Thank You! Hmm, what was it like...? Discovering, and re-discovering myself. My studies helped me to better understand who I am & why people are the way they are. That understanding helped me to express myself on a much deeper level. With experience came growth, and that growth guided me into embracing my purpose with confidence & power. I grew more aligned with this purpose both as an artist & as a human being. To God be all the Glory.
We really enjoyed your song "Beam Show” from your EP 'Concrete JungleFlower'. How would you describe your creative process behind this song and record?
I’m so happy you enjoyed it! When I first wrote the record, I was learning a lot about the world I live in, and the intricately-designed systems & agendas in place. This rabbit-hole I fell into while studying the matrix inspired a lot of the subject matter I chose to speak on. I pray those who listen, hear the message behind the art, and not just the melodies. The instrumental was a collaboration between my blood cousin & I. As we cook up, I spit the lyrics & structure the song while we organize the beat.
What inspired you to write this EP? Do you draw any inspiration from other artists? Who?
The inspiration behind this EP came from my own life experience. My mind, I learned, is the most powerful muscle in my body, aside from my heart. What I witness in my lifetime, and what I choose to tune into, is what shapes my reality. This EP is my introduction into the music world, both as an artist & as an individual. Who I am, is what I express; what my truth is—what I believe in, what I perceive in this human condition, and what I’ve faced, alone, & with my peoples—is what inspired me to write this EP. Of course, I draw inspiration from many of my favorite artists (Lauryn Hill, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Jhené Aiko, etc.) and from my peers as well. However, I choose to tune out of others’ artistries, so that I can create what I know in my soul is uniquely my own.
What are you looking forward to the most out of this year in 2020? What can we expect to see from Yhung Sky?
What I’m looking forward to the most out of 2020 is manifesting all of my dreams & goals. Outside of greater growth & healing/health, I pray to find stability in all forms. I’ll be tapping into more film—movies, shows, music videos, published modeling, etc. & I’m manifesting the music being featured in film, as well as a world tour, and of course, new music!! Stay in tune, me & gang got a lot in stores for y’all.
