Welcome to BuzzMusic, Zenia Marshall. We admire the introspective and passionate approach you've taken with your new single, "Prove Me Wrong." What inspired you to create this passionate and reflective new tune?

Thank you for having me! While trying to complete another song, I accidentally wrote the melody for “Prove Me Wrong”. From there, the song took a life of its own, and the lyrics tumbled out like a diary entry onto paper. I was in my head about a relationship I was in and started listing every worry I had about how disastrously it could end. From projecting past baggage, I carried and assumed the worst to simultaneously hoping this guy could be the one to "Prove Me Wrong". It took a lot of vulnerability to write Prove Me Wrong - self-diagnosing my own fears in love and admitting to my own cynicism while also acknowledging the inner mushy hopeless romantic voice that leads me to find myself between hope and fear in every blooming relationship. Even in the most successful relationships, we end up fighting ourselves & our own optimism and pessimism in our pursuit of love. Sometimes it's hard to know which side we'll cave into and what future that will create for us. In a way, this song tries to explore all those possibilities.

What was your favorite part about creating the new single "Prove Me Wrong?" What moments or experiences did you enjoy most?

I really enjoyed recording this in New Zealand while I was filming in Auckland! It was an awesome experience to record on the other side of the world! I also had a blast filming the music video. It was a 3-day shoot all over Vancouver where my director, actor, and I went on road trips, visited galleries, stores, and beaches, and ran everywhere we could find, spontaneously shooting and creating as we went. Such an awesome time! Definitely a shoot for the books!!

What was your vision for the sound and vibe of "Prove Me Wrong?" What sort of atmosphere did you want the song to have?

I originally wrote Prove Me Wrong as a love ballad on the piano but wanted to give the song energy and a romantic hue and lush atmosphere. Giving an acoustic demo to my producer, I send over some sounds I was inspired by and asked him for the audio to sound like "Pink Skies" and quite literally sent him pictures of the types of pink skies I wanted the song to somehow sound like - hoping he didn't think I was crazy to do this haha! He ran with it and somehow gave it exactly what I hoped for! From there, we polished off some parts with guitar, bg's, and big swooping transitions, and it brought us to where it is today! Sunset skies were always the heart of Prove Me Wrong hence the pink sky cover art. In so many ways, Prove Me Wrong was a sunset or sunrise to me - the undecided middle of hope and fear in the midst of budding rose-colored love.

How does "Prove Me Wrong" represent you as an artist? How can listeners get to know you and your sound better through this song?

Sonically, I think to Prove Me Wrong spoke to a more playful, fun, energetic side to my sound while staying loyal to the lush ambiance I always love, from soft swirling bg's to dreamy guitars to swooping dramatic transitions. It's exactly the world I wanted this story to exist in, and I look forward to tapping back into this sound in the future! Having previously only released heartbreak songs, I feel this song speaks to my inner soft, hopeless romantic while alluding to the heartbroken nature of my other songs. It perfectly paints a picture of some honest perspectives of blooming love for me - definitely pulling back the curtain on my overthinking mind and battle of inner perspectives when it comes to love. I always thought it was humorous to explore the juxtaposition of pessimism in every verse and optimism in every chorus. I hope listeners can relate to me!

What's next for you?

This song had actually branched out from another unreleased tune I was trying to complete. So it only seems right that that may be the next tune to come!
