From Sydney to Los Angeles, singer-songwriter and talented musician Jeffrey Chan is marking a new chapter in his artistic career with a funky, dance-pop single titled "My Oh My."
Combining his classical piano training, deep vocals, and lush and groovy electronic sounds, Jeffrey Chan is undoubtedly carving his own path in the often cookie-cutter music scene.
Influenced by new wave and synth-pop, Chan embraces vivid lyrics and catchy melodies to create immersive listening experiences, like his debut album FaultLine and its follow-up FaultLine: AfterShock.
Embracing the change that comes with moving across the world is Jeffrey Chan in his latest single, "My Oh My," influenced by the sonic stylings of icons like Daft Punk and Justin Timberlake. As he continues to expand his artistic reach in Australia, the US, and beyond, there's no doubt songs like "My Oh My" will help him do precisely that.
Hitting play on "My Oh My," the experience kicks off with smooth electronic keys that lead into a funky, guitar-driven verse alongside slappy drums and Jeffrey Chan's deep, velvety vocals. As he expresses not being used to his surroundings and this new way of life, Chan confesses that these new experiences and relationships are exactly what he needs.
The song's hook is infectious, radiating all sorts of synth-pop and new-wave vibes that lead us straight to the dancefloor. While Jeffrey Chan continues serenading listeners with lyrics of control, lust, love, and personal growth, he realizes that big changes, although scary, can lead to amazing things (or people).
Give yourself a sonic pick-me-up with Jeffrey Chan's catchy new single, "My Oh My," now available on all digital streaming platforms.
Welcome to Buzz, Jeffrey! We love the upbeat and passionate vibes of your recent single, "My Oh My." What experiences inspired you to write a song about embracing a new, refreshing change?
'My Oh My' was really inspired by a lot of different experiences I've had since I moved to Los Angeles. I feel like I've had a lot of positive changes and amazing experiences and been surrounded by amazing music, culture, and people.
Would you say that "My Oh My" marks a new musical chapter for you? What do you want this song to establish?
I think so! Creatively, this feels like a new direction for me. I've been releasing one-off singles since 2020 with 'Glow,' but since I moved to Los Angeles, my experiences and being in a new city have really allowed me to experiment and embrace a new sound. It's still the catchy, feel-good pop vibe I want to go for, but I wanted it to feel a little more sophisticated and story-driven in this next chapter of my creative work.
Did you work alongside any producers or musicians when creating "My Oh My?" What was that creative process like?
I worked on this mostly alone, but I did go back to my go-to mastering engineer, who I've worked with since I started releasing music, Julian Lowe, who has worked with an amazing list of people I admire! On the photo front, however, I did have a lot of fun working with a friend of mine, Elisha Knight, on shooting the cover for this one. We got to really experiment and play around with some of the ideas we had - the cover is one of my favorite covers I've ever shot.
How does "My Oh My" stand out from your previous singles? What makes it unique to you?
With 'My Oh My,' I really wanted to step up the vibes and make it feel a little more elevated and sophisticated. I've been listening to Jessie Ware since 2020, and her albums 'What's Your Pleasure?' and 'That! Feels Good' has influenced me; I saw someone coin the term sophist-pop, and that's the vibe I'm trying to go for with 'My Oh My.' I released this song in the lead-up to Pride Month and my run of Pride gigs, and so I wanted this to feel unapologetically fun, feel good, and gay. It was SO fun playing this one at WeHo Pride this past week!
What did you want listeners to feel when hearing "My Oh My"? How did you want this song to impact them?
I wanted to capture the feeling of meeting someone new and how electric that feeling is; the moment where you're not sure it's lust or love, but you know it's something special. I want my listeners to ultimately have a good time with this song; there's so much dreary and sad music out there nowadays, so I wanted to put something fun out there where people can blast it while they're driving, hanging out with friends, or getting ready for a fun night out!
