Avi Wisnia Reminds Us To Live In The Moment With, "Catching Leaves"

Just in time for fall, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist Avi Wisnia releases his sweet-sounding and tender single entitled "Catching Leaves."

After high school, Avi Wisnia studied theory and composition at NYU while booking shows at venues like Rockwood Music Hall, The Living Room, and The Bitter End. He then took a step back from music to mourn the loss of his brother, where his grandfather, a holocaust survivor, invited Wisnia to join him on tour, which inspired Wisnia to write and create the album 'Catching Leaves.'

'Catching Leaves' is the latest forthcoming album from singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia, who recently released the project's lead single and title track. The entire album is said to be an ode to living in the moment while finding peace in growth, change, and acceptance. The title track offers a similar refreshing sentiment, especially with the tender instrumentals and their sweet hints of jazz and roots.

Expanding on the title track, "Catching Leaves," the song peacefully opens with a warm piano melody and a soft snare drum that sets the song's passionate and heartfelt tone. As Avi Wisnia's tender and chilling vocals appear, he begins to expand on being tired of chasing down the leaves that flow with the unpredictable winds.

Continuing through the song, Avi Wisnia touches on living in the moment and not worrying about tomorrow when we're missing out on today. The instrumentals are something straight out of a Disney movie, effortlessly cinematic and well-rounded, allowing us to explore Wisnia's vast creative abilities.

Thank you for joining us at BuzzMusic Avi Wisnia. What a peaceful and refreshing piece you've delivered with your recent single, "Catching Leaves." What inspired you to write this particular song?

I was sitting in one of my favorite parks in South Philly as I was putting this song together. I was experiencing a lot of loss in my life, so I was coming from a very sad and melancholy place. As the breeze picked up, I watched the leaves move and I realized I wanted to write a song that felt and sounded like that. Grasping for inspiration can be a lot like trying to catch leaves in the wind. Catching Leaves is ultimately about chasing inspiration.

Why did you choose to include this deep and cinematic instrumental within "Catching Leaves?"

I love the way music allows us to express something that can't be articulated in words. I want the listener to feel like they are getting caught up in the swirling wind, like a pile of leaves going in all different directions. The path of a leaf caught in a breeze is chaos. It’s gentle, but it’s still chaos. There is a seemingly directionless progression to the changing chords and varying string sounds in this section of the song that help sweep you up in that gentle chaos.

What message were you trying to deliver with the lyrics to "Catching Leaves?" What did you want to leave them with?

We spend a lot of our lives searching, struggling, pining, grasping wildly for things beyond our reach. Especially with the final lyric and the conclusion of the song, it's a reminder to slow down, to take a moment, to be still amidst the chaos all around us. Sometimes, it's when you stop searching that you find what you are looking for.

Why did you decide to name the album after this particular track? How does the single embody what the album is all about?

This song really sets the mood, like setting a temperature on a thermostat, like getting the carrot-ginger soup to start your meal. Because a lot of the songs on this album revolve around images of nature and the way our lives are mirrored in the natural world, Catching Leaves gives you a hint of what to expect. It also captures a lot of the themes that run throughout the whole album: trying to make sense of the world, trying to find order in things beyond our control, how to cope with the passage of time.

What's next for you?

I’m working on a few videos to help bring the songs of Catching Leaves to life. And I can’t wait to get back out and tour with this new album and do live concerts again. For me, getting to perform is one of the greatest things I get to do. I think the pandemic has left all of us hungry for connection and appreciative of being able to be in a room with other people grooving to the same music. I’m excited to make that happen.
