Welcome to Buzz, Dread Fury! We loved “Underneath Your Mask," which had a great funk and soul feel! We had to ask how the inspiration for it came about.

Thanks for having me back again, guys. And thank you for the lovely compliment. The inspiration came some years ago, as I first wrote it in 2007. But I just couldn’t find something to fit it into. So I left it on the shelf, and then during lockdown, I recorded it again. I still wasn’t unhappy, so I left it on the shelf.

Only after my last release in 2021 did I feel I could get a definitive version, which you hear now. I thought about the Stax, Motown, early-Sly & The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and Jimi Hendrix record with a bit of Prince there, and that was the template. Lyrically, I wanted to explore when your significant other hides something from you, and you try to find out what they think. But, you know, you dig deep enough, sometimes you won’t always like what you find.

What has been your favorite part of your music journey thus far, and what are you most looking forward to in the future? You have an album slated for release soon, right?

I do love that I can record at home and at will and spend time on the project to get it to sound exactly how I want it to. But the best part is performing what you created live in front of an audience. I mean, there is no better feeling. I mean, you sit at home, create a track, planning every beat, every note, etc, and then you get to play it live in front of people, and they enjoy it. What’s not to love? As far as the future goes, you are right. I have an album coming out this year, and it was made within three years. Plus, I’m looking forward to playing these songs live.

What does music mean to you, and what quality do you think is most important for musicians?

For me, music is a way to communicate. It’s a way to express myself in the best way possible. It’s my way of letting people know what I am thinking. But it also allows me to tell stories too. To show that my mind is always creative. And I guess that’s important for me when listening to other musicians. I believe musicians need to enjoy being creative and fearless.

This age of social media is counter-productive for musicians in that they obsess over algorithms and start creating produce in the hope of something catching fire, and then it trends. And when it doesn’t, they start wallowing in self-pity. We’re musicians. We make music. Let’s enjoy it. Being creative is fun. It always has been and always will be.

If your listeners could take one thing away from your music, what would you want it to be?

I want my listeners to take away that nothing is impossible and you possess the tools to do whatever you want to make you happy. We have one life, so make it count.

What’s next for Dread Fury, and are there any other releases you’re especially excited to share with fans?

I will release a few more singles to promote the album before it drops. “Underneath Your Mask” has set it up so the next singles, I hope, will build the anticipation. There’s a video on the way, too. But I’m excited about the album. It’s a double album, and each track is linked thematically, so it flows well. I can’t wait for you all to hear it.
