Welcome to BUZZ, Emily Coupe! Congratulations on the release of "Pretty Penny." This track has such an infectious energy and positivity in a theme where you know what you're worth. Can you share the inspiration behind the song and how it came to life?

Thank you so much! The inspiration behind Pretty Penny came from just getting together with my friends and then coming up with a cool concept and riff! First, we came up with a guitar riff, added some basic topline melodies, and came up with the title, and it all evolved from there. So it all happened very organically! Also, the concept/symbol itself really stood out to us once we developed it. It’s funny because I can relate to this song since I just went through a breakup, more than when I was writing it. So, it all eventually came back full circle.

You have such a wide range of musical influences. What non-musical influences stem from your music? How do these speak into the music you create?

Thank you! First of all, my romantic and personal relationships filter into my music as I add inspiration from my life to write about. However how I am feeling currently about the world, as well as the emotions I am currently going through in my life/career, definitely influences my music, too.

As a singer-songwriter, storytelling is a significant aspect of your music. How do you approach crafting compelling narratives in your songs?

I honestly think the best way to craft compelling songs is to live life. I think sometimes, when I don’t write for a while (and I can’t write right now because I have nodules), I know that when I get back to writing, I will have a wealth of topics to write about since I have lived a lot more of life (recently been through a breakup), and also have new musical influences to draw from too! Throughout the day, I’m always coming up with new song ideas and writing them down, so I look forward to exploring that either by myself or with a co-writer soon!

Moving from Australia to Los Angeles is a significant journey. How has this change in environment influenced your musical evolution?

100%! Not only is Los Angeles very different than Australia, but moving here as a young adult was such an eye-opening journey that it really did influence who I have grown into as a person and as an artist. Also, I think Los Angeles forces you to become the best version of yourself to survive here physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. It is the biggest journey I’ve ever embarked upon

Can you delve deeper into the symbolism behind this concept and how it relates to the broader theme of the track?

Yes! Pretty Penny talks about the idea that she always thought she would be a 'pretty penny' in someone’s life, a prized possession that would be kept and cherished and still wanted on that person’s rainy days or downtimes. However, she realizes that she was merely a trophy in this person’s life, wasn’t something that would be saved for a rainy day, and was easily discarded and left in a puddle to Rust. This symbolizes that it was easy for him to break up with her, and he also didn’t see her value and worth even while he was with her, nor did he support or cherish her dreams.
