Congratulations on releasing your bright yet emotional debut single, "bittersweet." Why did you choose this song to be your big introduction to the music scene?
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. "bittersweet" was the first demo I made for what became the "chasing luma" project that really made me feel the emotions that all of my favorite music made me feel - so chronologically, it just made a lot of sense to me!
What inspired the emotional lyrical content within "bittersweet?" When did you begin writing this piece?
Without being too revealing, "bittersweet" is about being at a crossroads in the world and struggling to find your truth. It's about asking yourself if it's worth it to abandon everything you know or to stay in your comfort zone; knowing you want more out of life, but not knowing quite how to get it yet - being aware that you'll probably be happier if you follow your heart and ambition, but being a bit timid of the cost of that. The first version was made in 2019 after a long and hard-fought battle with writer's block, and it immediately had me dancing around my room - that was when I knew that it was going to be a song worth fighting for.
Do you plan on continuing to merge alt-pop with modern electronic in your future tunes, similar to the sound and vibe within "bittersweet?" Would you stamp this sound as your go-to?
Totally! I've always listened to a wide array of music, so I pull inspiration from so many different places, and I don't see any end to that. The main thing I really want to capture in my music is a certain feeling and emotion - that I've deemed really hard to explain with words. Somewhere between nostalgia, wistfulness, melancholy, and crying and smiling at the same time - and I think there's a lot of room for sonic experimentation within those guidelines. The new music I have planned for the rest of the year will help explain the feeling I'm trying to capture much better than I ever could with words!
Could you explain more about yourself and what you want to represent and stand for as an artist? What should listeners associate you and your music with?
I'm 23 and from a really small town on the East Coast of Canada - I basically grew up on the internet since there were very few people I connected with growing up, and that was a pretty isolating feeling. I've spent as long as I can remember being obsessively passionate about music - and I really just want to share that with the world. I want to stand for the joy of representing yourself and your story through art.
People creating things that didn't exist before in any medium makes the world a better place to live. I want to encourage people to be themselves, to make decisions based on love instead of fear. And at the end of the day, I hope to encourage people to take care of themselves, reach for their dreams, and be good to other people - those are values worth standing for.
