Welcome to BuzzMusic, Faith. We feel the emotion and strife you've put into your recent single "I Don't Need You (I'm Better)." What inspired this single?
To put it quite bluntly, my ex inspired this song. He was a real jerk and put me through a lot, and I have no shame in saying that I’m petty and knew I wanted to write a sassy song to call him out. To get back at him in my own way. I’m really happy with how it came out cause I knew I wanted to write something that had mean edges to it but was a bop!
Faith, could you expand your songwriting process for "I Don't Need You (I'm Better)?" Did you face any challenging moments when writing about the experiences you did?
So this song actually was one that started writing itself. I was at work, and some of the lyrics in the bridge just started coming to me, and I wrote them down. The pre-chorus came next on a different day, and I quickly knew that they belonged in the same song. Some of my favorite songs happen that way. When I’m not even in writing mode, and I just randomly think of things, it feels most organic and meant to be. As for challenging moments, I’d say coming up with the melody for the chorus didn’t come to me as fast. I was already just so obsessed with the pre-chorus that I knew I needed something equally as fun to match.
What was your goal regarding the listener's experience with "I Don't Need You (I'm Better)?" What do you hope the single does for them?
I’d like to think that as an artist, I’m relatively relatable. I’ve been open about everything I’ve written about, and I haven’t been ashamed to proudly admit I’m working on an entire breakup album, and I’m not sorry about it. We all have bad exes; we all get angry and don’t know how to handle it sometimes. My hope is that people that listen feel like they can relate. Like they are heard, and someone else knows what they’re feeling. I know for me personally, when I listen to a song that happens to match my situation and feelings about it almost perfectly, it’s such a great feeling. I want this to be that for someone. A song people can let out their anger and emotions too, but in a fun way!
Did you have any musical influences in mind when creating "I Don't Need You (I'm Better)?" Did you want listeners to remember other artists when hearing the single?
I’ve been getting really into Maisie Peters lately. She’s a singer/songwriter from the UK, and she really knows how to put a lot of mixed emotions into a catchy tune. She had a song on her most recent album that I am obsessed with, and it inspired my vision for the bridge of my song for sure. As for remembering artists while the listener listens, it’s always good to be inspired by artists you listen to or have traces of them in you, but I definitely hope people can enjoy my music as a stand-alone. I’m striving to be my own artist and pave my way in the industry, and I hope that is something that will show more and more through the music I release.
What's next for you?
I’ve been working on this album for a while now but have constantly been getting roadblock after roadblock. I’m hoping over the next year, I can finally make good progress and release an album I’m super proud of. I’m already beyond proud of what I’ve done for it so far, including my first single off the album, ‘Someday.' That song holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to see what other songs follow. I’d also like to start doing more shows again. I miss performing and will definitely be dreaming of the day I get to go on tour. Till then, I’m going to be working hard to make it all happen!
