Becoming an independent artist has been an extraordinary journey, one marked by unexpected turns and the convergence of various passions.
My path in the music industry began not with a microphone in hand but with a camera. As a professional photographer, I was privileged to capture the raw, unfiltered moments of musicians both on and off the stage. This vantage point gave me a unique perspective on the world of music, one that would eventually lead me to discover my own voice.
Raised in the serene yet culturally rich Kailua, Hawaii, I grew up as a gay Latino man in an environment where my identity often felt like a challenge. Navigating this complexity in a community that was not always accepting shaped me profoundly. It instilled in me resilience and a deep well of emotions, which I would later channel into my music.
Photography was my first love, and through it, I connected deeply with artists, capturing their essence and their stories. It was during these moments behind the lens that I began to feel a pull towards the narratives unfolding before me. I started to write, not just to document but to create. My words found their way into songs, and I began songwriting for other artists. This transition felt natural; my background as a published poet honed my lyricism, allowing me to craft stories that resonated deeply.
One of the most pivotal moments in my journey was the creation of my song "FrEQ Wit It." This track is more than just music to me; it is a culmination of my experiences and a celebration of the joy and freedom that music brings. "FrEQ Wit It" is designed to get people dancing, to feel the rhythm, and to let go of their inhibitions. It embodies the essence of feminine-style rap music while staying authentic to my queer identity. I wrote this song in a very playful manner, which exudes the confidence I carry with me every day. If I hadn’t found my way to being an artist, most would say I should’ve been a comedian.
As an artist, my strongest skill lies in my lyricism. The years I spent as a poet allowed me to develop a unique voice, one that speaks to the complexities of life, love, and identity. My lyrics are a reflection of my journey, each word carefully chosen to evoke emotion and connection.
Transitioning from photography to songwriting and then to performing my own music has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to step out from behind the camera and into the spotlight, sharing my stories and my truth. The energy of performing and seeing people connect with my music on the dance floor is an unparalleled feeling.
I continue to create rap and electronic music that gets people moving, always striving to push the boundaries and explore new sounds. My journey as an independent artist is far from over, and I am excited for what lies ahead. The support from my fans and the music community fuels my passion, and I am grateful for every opportunity to share my art with the world.
