GEN-Y Lets the Dancefloor Lead on the 'Better 4 Ever' EP

GEN-Y has never seemed particularly interested in respecting the imaginary borders between electronic genres, and the new Better 4 Ever EP makes a convincing argument for keeping it that way. Across four tracks and 21 minutes, the producer moves through bright, loose-limbed house music with the kind of spontaneity that can disappear when dance records become too concerned with fitting neatly into a scene.
Following previous releases through labels including BAKK and Clone Records, GEN-Y brings that open-ended philosophy into Better 4 Ever, a project built less around a predetermined concept than a naturally emerging chemistry. The EP came together after a friend and collaborator listened through a larger collection of unfinished and ongoing material, identifying four tracks that unexpectedly shared a common energy. Rather than forcing cohesion afterward, GEN-Y simply followed what was already there.
That instinctive approach carries through “Nu Visionz,” “Show U Luv,” “Get Free,” and “Don’t Worry.” Together, the tracks feel sunny and immediate without sacrificing the slightly unpredictable edge that makes GEN-Y’s broader catalog interesting. House provides the foundation, but the producer’s history of moving between acid breaks, electro, techno, psychedelia, and raw live experimentation keeps the project from feeling overly polished or boxed in.
Most importantly, Better 4 Ever understands its job. This is dance music designed to move rather than over-explain itself. “I just hope people listen to their own enjoyment, let the energy of the tracks speak to them personally, and take it for what it is on the dancefloor,” GEN-Y says.
It is a fitting philosophy for an EP created through instinct in the first place. Better 4 Ever leaves interpretation open, turns the energy up, and trusts the listener to handle the rest.
