In This Unpredictable Life, Love Crushed Velvet Has No Choice but to “Ride the Dice”

Sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches the best you can.

Led by their charismatic and larger-than-life frontman A.L.X, Love Crushed Velvet has steadily carved a niche for themselves with their unique and compelling sound. Formed in New York, for these talented musicians, “The City That Never Sleeps” is more than just a backdrop. It's a muse, a source of raw, unfiltered inspiration that permeates every note and lyric, and inspired by this muse, they’ve become one of the most exciting and intriguing talents in the scene today, even if they’ve already established themselves.

With hits like “Letter” and “Goodbye Goldblatt” from 2011, Love Crushed Velvet has already tasted levels of success most artists find unattainable. It would’ve been easy to rest on their laurels, but A.L.X and Love Crushed Velvet aren’t ones for complacency. Building on the incredible foundation they already made for themselves with releases like 2022’s acclaimed album “Souls and the Barren Heart,” they’ve positioned themselves to break out on an ever greater level in the coming year.

If good old rock n’ roll is something you fancy, you’ll fall in love with Love Crushed Velvet’s latest release, “Ride The Dice.” “Ride The Dice” serves as a poignant anthem to life's capricious nature and the passion with which frontman A.L.X. exclaims, “Gotta ride the dice” and delivers lyrics like “You never looked at me like a winner / With whom you build your life” is more than a little infectious. Accompanied by a striking music video that sees a dynamic singer set a bar alight performing, the titular song, “Ride The Dice,” stands as a compelling testament that Love Crushed Velvet can create immersive experiences both aurally and visually.

Love Crushed Velvet is poised to ascend to even greater heights as we ring in the new year. Whenever you’re ready, tap in and stream their new release, “Ride The Dice,” on all majour streaming platforms.

Welcome to BuzzMusic, Love Crushed Velvet. We loved "Ride The Dice"; what a rousing release! What was the creative process like for this release?

The song was written in the early stages of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. Since getting together in person to collaborate seemed so risky at the time due to all of the unknowns.

What was the inspiration behind the music video, and what was your favorite part about bringing the vision for the music video to life?

Our last few music videos were abstract and used virtual reality to enhance the music experience. We wanted to get back to storytelling for this video while still using VR/360. It was a challenge, but we pulled it off.

The process of making the "Ride the Dice" video was different than the last 3 VR videos in that it was more of a group effort, and we shot all of the character-based footage in person compared to the remote digital collaborations that constituted our last few videos. The production team was great, and I loved working with New York University's film department on this with them as a partner.

What are your favorite music-related memories thus far?

I frequently host jams in my home, and I'm always awed by how you can put different people in a room who have never played together, yet extraordinary things come out of it almost without exception. I'm not necessarily one to dwell on memories, but some of those nights are special because of the newfound creative intimacy that people develop with each other.

What does music mean to you, and what do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

Music is the most multidimensional form of expression I can conjure up. It's sonic, physical, emotional, spiritual, creative. I wouldn't know what to do without it. From a listener's perspective, the most rewarding thing for me would be for the music to resonate with listeners and have them feel connected. Music is highly subjective, so little out there is universally moving. But if a segment of the population connects with LCV's music and engages with it, that's all any creator can ask for without getting greedy.

What's next for Love Crushed Velvet? Can we expect to hear more new music soon, and is there anything you want to say to your fans?

We have an abundance of new music to be released starting this month. An album will drop in the early spring, and another one is ready to go that is right on its tail. I thank our supporters for being with us, coming to shows, and being willing to go on the open-ended ride of Love Crushed Velvet.
