Julie Eddy Imagines Love In Another Universe With Heartbreaking New Single “Mars”

Nashville-based country singer-songwriter Julie Eddy is taking heartbreak beyond the stars with her emotionally captivating new single, “Mars." Blending cinematic guitar melodies with vulnerable storytelling, the release explores the painful realization that sometimes, even the strongest love isn't enough to keep two people together.
Originally from Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Julie Eddy has been steadily making her mark on the country music scene, accumulating over 3 million career streams and 7 million TikTok views while sharing stages with artists including Warren Zeiders, Cole Swindell, Ella Langley, and Parker McCollum.
Now, with “Mars,” Julie Eddy introduces a deeply personal chapter of her artistry, transforming heartbreak into a beautifully imagined alternate reality. Co-written with Maddie Lenhart in the fall of 2022, the song emerged as Julie Eddy navigated the emotional aftermath of a relationship that was slowly falling apart despite her efforts to save it.
Rather than approaching heartbreak through anger or resentment, “Mars” suggests that some relationships aren't necessarily lacking love, but cannot survive the circumstances around them.
The song's celestial imagery offers a compelling perspective on romantic loss, imagining a distant universe where two people might have found the future they couldn't build together on Earth. With delicate, atmospheric instrumentation complementing its emotionally direct lyrics, “Mars” captures the complicated space between accepting an ending and wishing things could have unfolded differently.
With editorial support from Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, plus recognition from the Academy of Country Music and Holler, Julie Eddy continues to demonstrate her ability to connect personal experiences with universal emotions.
“Mars” was written in 2022 during a difficult chapter in your personal life. What made now the right time to release such a vulnerable song, and has its meaning changed for you over the past four years?
Ever since we wrote “Mars,” I’ve wanted to release it, but it didn’t feel like it quite fit on previous projects for a lot of reasons. I really wanted to make sure it had its own moment and the chance to shine as a single. When it came time to start planning this next chapter of releases, it jumped right back out at me as if the song was telling me it was ready.
It’s interesting how a song can shift and change for me as time passes, especially one that’s so personal. For me, “Mars” still holds the same weight of how I felt when we wrote it, but has given me a newfound perspective on my own resilience & how time really can heal all wounds. I can look back now on how I was feeling then & find the beauty in being able to heal through & rise above it.
The concept of imagining a relationship working in another universe is incredibly powerful. How did you and Maddie Lenhart develop that idea, and was there a particular lyric that brought the entire song together?
We sat down for that write with a completely different idea in mind & as we kept working on that, this one just kind of fell into place. It’s almost as if the song was up in the atmosphere around us just waiting for us to reach out and grab it. Once we landed on the overall concept of the song, we just started listing out different space references, and the chorus fell together really quickly.
There's an important distinction between a relationship ending because the love disappears and one ending even though the love is still there. What did writing “Mars” teach you about accepting situations you couldn't change?
There definitely is. I think there’s a lot of beauty and a lot of strength in being able to “zoom out” of a situation, so to speak, & look at a situation as it actually is instead of what you want it to be. Writing “Mars” was all about acceptance for me. It taught me that you can want something & miss something & have your heart shatter over something, while still knowing that it’s not right for you. That’s all part of the human experience, I think & something you can learn & grow from. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is walk away, even when you know it’s gonna break your heart.
You've spent the year performing alongside some of the country's biggest names while playing more than 200 shows annually. How have those experiences shaped your confidence as an artist and how you approach your own music?
It’s been such an incredible experience to get to watch so many artists that I admire from the wings of the stage. So many people have given me incredible opportunities and advice that has shaped how I view this business & my career as an artist. I think the thing that has stuck with me the most is to go with my gut & be extra mindful of the people I keep around me.
My band & crew are some of the best humans I know & having people around you that encourage & support you to not only be the best artist you can be every day, but the best human you can be every day, will always make the biggest difference in how you’re able to show up for your fans & for yourself.
With millions of streams, growing industry recognition, and appearances at iconic Nashville venues like the Bluebird Cafe, what aspects of your artistry do you want to develop as you enter the next chapter of your career?
I really just want to continue to connect with as many people as I can. For some reason, as humans, we are programmed to believe that we all are experiencing something so different from others during our lives and have adapted to believe that we’re all alone in those feelings. I personally believe there are more similarities in us than differences. When you dial it back, we all experience joy, grief, heartbreak, anger, longing, and every emotion under the sun… the only difference is whatever caused those emotions. The artists that have meant the most to me as a listener always made me feel like I was invited into their big feelings right along with them & that I wasn’t alone in feeling a similar way. I want to do more of that with as many people as I can with my music & I think the rest will just fall into place as it’s meant to.
