Finnish alternative rock project Krumbukten introduces listeners to a deeply reflective musical world with “My Heart May Slumber,” a release that explores independence, emotional vulnerability, and the complicated beauty of following an unconventional path. Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Niklas Finnäs created the track, which combines evocative storytelling with an organic recording approach that prioritizes human connection over studio perfection.

Growing up in a Swedish-speaking community on Finland's west coast, Niklas Finnäs developed an early fascination with songwriting, starting as a teenage drummer who recorded original music with friends on a cassette deck. After studying music in London and performing with bands in Helsinki, Niklas Finnäs began developing Krumbukten in 2019 and eventually brought together a group of musicians to record the project in January 2026.

“My Heart May Slumber” follows someone who has chosen the road less traveled, acknowledging the isolation and uncertainty that can accompany independence while celebrating the quiet confidence of knowing you've made the right decisions for yourself.

Inspired by the sweeping landscapes and emotional storytelling of films like Dances with Wolves and Cold Mountain, the song embraces an almost cinematic atmosphere, inviting listeners to imagine their own stories within its instrumental passages.

Rather than constructing the recording through extensive individual overdubs, Niklas Finnäs brought musicians together to perform in the same room, capturing the spontaneous chemistry that makes live instrumentation feel so compelling.

Beneath its atmospheric arrangements, “My Heart May Slumber” also reflects on the emotional exhaustion of adulthood and the importance of rediscovering moments of wonder, stillness, and genuine connection.

With Krumbukten, Niklas Finnäs creates music that leaves room for interpretation, reminding listeners that choosing your own direction can be difficult but ultimately worthwhile.

“My Heart May Slumber” explores the loneliness of choosing an unconventional path while remaining confident in that decision. How much of this story reflects your own experiences, and what inspired you to approach the subject through this particular narrative?

I think you have to have experience with something in order to write about it convincingly. I’m not saying the song is strictly autobiographical, but going your own way and taking the creative path does, in my experience, at times go hand in hand with loneliness.

I write the music first, and I find it helpful to always have a title to focus my thoughts. This song just started to sound like a story about a journey and about loneliness and longing in connection to that.

The aim wasn’t to write a vocal-driven song, because the idea at the time was to make an instrumental album. But it became clear to me early on that the song needed a vocalist to feel complete. That realization forced me to rethink the concept for the album, which ended up being a good thing. So the answer to your question is that the song actually inspired the narrative.

You’ve mentioned that the responsibilities of adulthood can make it difficult to experience genuine wonder and emotional connection. How did that realization influence the song's title and the deeper meaning behind its lyrics?

Adulthood has a way of numbing our senses, and the title reflects that feeling. It can be an emotional tiredness or just being too busy to have time to experience and feel things. But you can’t just give up when times are tough, so we keep on going despite the struggle we sometimes face. Those two aspects and the fact that things aren’t always what they seem make up the key elements I wanted expressed through the lyrics.

Films like Dances with Wolves and Cold Mountain influenced the atmosphere you envisioned for the song. How do cinematic imagery and visual storytelling shape your songwriting process, particularly when developing instrumental arrangements?

It was actually the other way around. While working on the song, those two movies, or rather my memory of them, started to creep into my thoughts. When finding a connection like that, I think the only thing you can do is to let it lead the way and see it through to the end.

I do draw a lot of inspiration from visual storytelling though, mainly from the mood the story sets and how it’s presented visually. I like to imagine what that would sound like, independently of the score that’s already in place.

You made a deliberate decision to record the musicians performing together rather than building the songs through individual overdubs. What did that approach bring to “My Heart May Slumber” that you believe would have been difficult to capture through a more conventional modern recording process?

I think you can capture a certain feel by recording live that you can’t get when overdubbing parts separately. I wanted the sound of a band playing together and a natural flow to the song. There are certain things that happen when you put musicians in a room together instead of in front of a computer screen.

The opportunity to react to each other in real time is important when going for a sound like that. And it’s absolutely crucial when it comes to improvisation, which is a big part of the album. My Heart May Slumber doesn’t feature improvisation in the same way, but I still think it benefited from the recording approach.

Krumbukten began as an idea in 2019 and took several years to develop into a recorded project. Looking back on that journey, how has your original vision evolved, and what can listeners expect from the broader album you're preparing to share?

I put down ideas for three songs in 2019 that ended up on the album. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with those ideas back then, because I felt they needed more context. It took until the fall of 2023 before I had time to develop that context and write more songs.

The idea is to give the listener a musical narrative where melodies, soundscapes, and the interplay between the musicians tell the story. Not having a lot of lyrics is beneficial to that, because it gives the listener more freedom to form their own interpretation of what the songs are about.

Other things to expect are an overall mood on the darker side, medium to slow tempos, and a good amount of variation in both instrumentation and song style. And I hope this comes through to the listener, because it’s kind of the main idea behind the whole project: an immersive and soothing experience punctuated by moments of tension and drama.

All in all, I think I’ve stayed true to the original vision. Some things turned out better than expected, and some things could have made my life easier if they’d been done differently. But on the whole, I’m happy and excited to share my music with the world!
