Welcome to BuzzMusic MXRTY THE PXRTY. What an exciting and uplifting tune you've released with "You & Me Anywhere (feat. Kat Leon)" What inspired you to write this romantic and feel-good single?
First off thanks for recognizing the vibe of song! Who hasn't imagined dropping everything and traveling the world? In addition, who hasn't dreamed about experiencing love in a new territory or nourishing current love in a spontaneous environment? Clearly I have lol. Given the global shut down, I really wanted to bring listeners to a fun, light hearted place of romance and with Y&MA, you get an easy 1 way ticket there.
Is this your first time working with vocalist Kat Leon for "You & Me Anywhere (feat. Kat Leon)?" What was your collaboration like?
Yeah this was my first time collaborating with Kat. We initially met working at a bar in Glendale and really connected over music. Not too long after, my old band NEW LANGUAGE and her band Holy Wars performed at The Hi-Hat (now The Goldfish) on the same bill. Fast forward to 2021, I knew I needed a badass, talented female to really sell the romance of Y&MA and Kat was my 1st choice. She happily agreed and in a "postal service fashion," sent back and forth a variety of vocal stems until we got the right takes, I then sent her parts to my producer where he finalized all the pieces in the song you hear today.
Do you often work with producer Steve Wilmot when creating your songs? Did you have a say in the sound and feel of the production in "You & Me Anywhere (feat. Kat Leon)?"
Yes and baby when I tell you we've been cooking...have mercy on this fuego catalog of music we got coming soon. We would focus on our forte during the writing process but essentially we are 50/50. He sent me a 8 bar sample of the tune on a plane headed to Italy on tour with OneRepublic, which set the catalyst of quality and traveling context. In the studio, he would be expanding on the beat and I would start rapping and singing, both extending ideas and creative input to achieve the best possible sound. For example, Steve helped hone in and finalize my pre-chorus/chorus melodies/rhythms and I had had the idea to add the drum fills into the chorus and I played the guitar on the choruses to name a few.
How do songs like this represent your brand and style of music? Do you normally release such uplifting and atmospheric songs like "You & Me Anywhere (feat. Kat Leon)?"
Y&MA is officially my 2nd single so there is no ceiling or pattern to my brand yet! To elaborate, my first single "WANNIT ALL" has a totally different vibe with a darker, alternative sound, I want MXRTY THE PXRTY radiate the juxtaposition of uplifting atmospheric songs and weird angsty jams too. I just wanna create cool, new shxt.
What's next for you?
A lot is on it's way! In the near future, Friday Oct.29th I will be releasing a "Tiny Desk" style, full band concert performance filmed at a studio in DTLA, which hopefully BuzzMusic will host hehe. Lastly, after 5 months I will be releasing a new single "Run It Back", on the darker hip-hop side of sounds Friday November 29th.
