Step Back J Is Back Again With More Vibes With New Hit "Wassup"

Hey Step Back J! For those who don’t know, how would you describe your sound and your approach to making music?

I like to think of myself as a very unique artist. I write mostly from a place of positivity which i think is missing a lot in hip hop, and even the world in general.

Let’s take about your latest release “Wassup?”! What was the writing process like for this track? What inspired it?

After making the beat, it was difficult finding a way to attack it at first. I ended up attacking it the best way i know how, with fun and good energy. A place of uniqueness. I talk about being different and deliver it in a way that you can tell i love being me. Not everything is perfect but things will work out perfectly how they should.

Do you always write from a place of honesty and personal experience, or does fiction come into play on occasion?

I always write from a place of honesty. When i first started making music that definitely was not the case. All i would hear on the radio is guns and drugs and so I would write about the same things even though i knew nothing about them. But once finding yourself in your music you have no reason to lie and if you do lie, the audience can easily find out.

What are the main values you want to represent in the hip hop world with your latest single “Wassup?”

The main value i want to push is that you can be positive and be different and that’s totally okay. Love yourself and let the listeners fall in love with who you really are.

What are your thoughts on mainstream hip hop at present, and your hopes for the genre going forwards?

My hope for the genre is to spread more positivity. It’s flooded with drugs, gang stuff and depression but there’s always been a lacking for something positive. We have a lot of music to cry too, a lot of music to party, we need more music we can feel good too.

What's next for Step Back J?

What’s next for me is a few different things. I have been stockpiling music to put together an album, as well as planning on releasing at least one track a month. I have been making a bunch of fun songs and will be releasing those as well as putting together an album that goes a little be deeper than just fun.
