With their upcoming second single, Toronto alt-rockers Survival Club are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
Born in the long darkness of a pandemic that was worse than it needed to be, “Maybe We’ll Learn Something From All of This (But Probably Not)” grew into a song more broadly about living in a world in which war, climate change, and late-stage capitalism all pose their own existential threat that hangs over just about everyone’s mental well-being.
In a few bittersweet minutes of punk-influenced guitar rock with a super-catchy chorus and even a ripping solo by saxophonist Ruhee Dewji, “Maybe We’ll Learn Something” is a song written for anyone who wants the world to be a better place but feels powerless to change it. Sometimes, it’s enough to get by. There’s a sadness to that, but there’s also a glimmer of defiance and even a hint of humor.
“This song is for anyone who spends any amount of time imagining a better world and then immediately getting frustrated that it just seems impossible,” the band says. “It’s obviously not impossible, but it often feels that way. This song is about allowing yourself to have those feelings. It’s also a reminder that we’re all in this together, win or lose.”
Survival Club comprises singer-songwriter and guitarist Adam Feibel, lead guitarist Justin Smirlies, bassist Bryan Brocoy, and drummer Tay Ewart. The members are experienced performers, having played stages all over Canada and beyond with several other Canadian acts, including Like Pacific, Fools of Love, Modern Space, and Brocoy.
