Welcome back, BuzzMusic Super Love, and congratulations on your latest release, "The Moon." In "The Moon," there's a palpable raw and emotional quality. Can you share the inspiration behind this expressive track?

I have never been afraid of change; maybe afraid of the unknown, but not change. Change will happen whether we want it to or not, so I’ve always chosen to harness fear and convert it into a drive that helps me shape what’s to come. “The Moon” is about being brave, taking chances, and knowing so deep in your bones that your path will be exactly the way you want it to be despite challenges or opposition.

We moved into the city the hard way without any sort of outside help. And during the move, there was a moment, a distinct instant of change. It was an identifiable second when we knew that nothing would ever be the same again. We were filled with the feeling of facing destiny and winning. We were on the train to Manhattan. We had the keys. And there we were, with just a suitcase, a guitar, and each other. Oh, also, our pet bird, Rex, drew more attention from strangers on the subway than any of the other strange things we’ve traveled with. This split second had such an impact, there in the damp air and pressure as we passed under the river. It was a moment of success. I mean, it was success wrapped in a ball of fear. But it was success! We were pushing our lives onto a new path, one that so many had told us would be too hard.

We love how this song effortlessly marries elements of nostalgic sounds with modern indie new wave. How do you navigate blending these influences while maintaining your unique musical identity?

We absolutely love blending genres! This is one of the defining qualities of our music. In doing this, we keep an overt focus on the rhythm. Getting the rhythm just right then merging in syncopated melodies is where we find that sweet spot.

For “The Moon,” we drew inspiration from 60s Pop, R&B, Soul, and Funk of the 70s. If that sounds like a lot, it’s because it was! Even tricker still is that “The Moon” has a strong message, and we didn’t want to hide it behind a big production. During the process, melodies became messier before they aligned in harmony. In fact, “The Moon” has three distinct melodic hooks, all competing for the listener’s attention. And somehow, each hook does its job perfectly.

Constance, your vocals in this track are profoundly passionate and authentic. How do you connect emotionally with the songs you perform, and how does that translate into your unique vocal delivery?

This is a tough one for me to put into words; it’s all a feeling. The vocal delivery is all about that emotional connection. Really living that moment of the song as I’m singing it, feeling it, the fear, the bravery, the excitement. Embodying the raw emotion. There is truth behind my emotions when I sing; that comes through in the vocal quality. I also aim to sing in a lower register. I’m a natural soprano, but the lower vibrations resonate differently. For the type of music we make, going an octave lower changes the emotion in the melody. For our music, it works better… It feels right.

The synthesizers in "The Moon" play a crucial role in shaping the song's sonic landscape. How do you experiment with and select the right sounds to enhance the musical experience?

We’re having a lot of fun with the synths! We like to keep the instrumentation of an album within a set group so that the album’s soundscape is cohesive. And for our first album, Je T’aime, we didn’t use any synths. We want to remove that limitation for our second album. Throughout the album, we’re relying heavily on a fuzzy synth and this electric piano, you know, to keep that sonic cohesion across all of the songs. There’s a fun dichotomy with this blend; the electric piano is a classic rock instrument, but the fuzzy synth is a newer sound.

“The Moon” doesn’t have an electric guitar in it. This is the first time we’ve done this in our songs, and we rely heavily on the electric piano to fill in that melody where the guitar would be.

But really, the easy answer in selecting the right sound is whether it sounds cool. We check each other on that. If it sounds cool, it makes it into the song.

What's next for you?

Next is wrapping our second album. And then straight onto a third! We’re already in the planning stages for that. But really, right now, we’re super excited about experimenting with music videos. We’ve already released videos for “Bored” and

“The Moon” from our upcoming album.

Music videos add another layer of expression to our music. Having the opportunity to craft visuals that align with the emotion of the song allows us to embody our message even more fully. And they go so fast compared to music production. It can be highly stressful, but the production time for a music video for us is just a day. We’ll storyboard and plan each shot beforehand, and then it’s a whirlwind of filming. It’s a lot of fun!
