Hi Matia! We love your voice! Have you had any vocal training? How did you get started making music?
First, THANK YOU for the kind words. That is a very sweet compliment :) I had a bit of vocal training when I was younger, yes, but I feel that my most significant vocal work came through the process of recording my first album Blind, with my producer Ken Mazur. Although he is not a vocal coach, he is an incredible talent, and a huge part of that is his ability to work with his artists in what he is able to bring out of them. He gave me many examples of recordings by various female singer/songwriters I had not given any thought to until he explained what to listen for, and suddenly, I really understood. He really helped cultivate my vocal execution.
Can you tell us about the meaning of the lyrics in “Extraordinary”?
Well, I think the interpretation of any work of art is left to the person who is enjoying it. The beauty of art is that it may be interpreted many different ways and none of those ways is incorrect. One of my favorite songs is by Peter Gabriel, and I have read what it is that he was speaking about in that song. But, to me, it is about something very different, and my understanding of what it is he meant does not minimize what it means to me.
Extraordinary, is to me, that each of us really only wants to feel like we are that special unique person for someone else. In the story of Extraordinary, the person telling the story just found out that (her) partner left her for someone else that they found extraordinary, but all along, she thought that he felt that way about her. Her heart is broken.
Recently, I took a part of those lyrics and related them in a FB post to how an animal feels when it has been abandoned by their human, left in the woods or on the side of the road, or in some shelter....alone. It has gained massive attention. Each of us, human or animal,....all living things, want to be loved, special. It's nature. This is the meaning of the song Extraordinary, for me.
What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far?
My story is quite long, so this answer could be quite detailed. I have had many very real and difficult struggles in my life. I have written about this considerably on line and in interviews. But to keep it as short as possible for the sake of this interview, I had a life altering change when I was young because illness almost took my life. That journey forced me away from music and took me on an unexpected ride of saving the lives of an enormous number of people around the world over an unexpected career in alternative medicine. And just as unexpected as that was, more unexpected opportunity brought music back into my life again. And, here I am two albums later, playing with some of the most seasoned, well known players of the last few decades. Playing with the people I do, makes me want to pinch myself...that they want to play my music.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
For me creativity is a life force, whatever that creativity may be. Writing music is only one way I create and, it provides me the ability to take the problems I have experienced or that I have observed in the world, and make sense out of them. My favorite thing about that is singing my lyrics on stage and seeing the people I am able to touch with those thoughts and connecting to their emotional response. It's like, in that moment my heart is speaking to their heart. Seeing the impact that my song has on them is a profound feeling that I cannot explain. Making a difference in people's (and animal's) lives, in whatever way I can, is the reason I do everything I do.
If you could change anything about the current music industry, what would it be?
This is a really difficult question. I am unsure how to answer it. As with everything in life, it is based on human nature. Music is no different. It has it's own life force that is determined by the current culture of the time. One cannot change that, but can only hope to find a place within it. I have found mine with the amazing people that I get to play music with. If nothing else, I have that and to know that I have touched the lives of many people with my songs. If one day my music gets more notice than that, that will be a cherry on an already really great cake.
