The FoxFires Showcase Beachy Surf Rock Vibes In Their Track “Brooklandia”

Writer's picture: BUZZ LABUZZ LA

Indie Rop/Rock collective The FoxFires have been making noise out of the NYC Metro Area since 2013. Their sound is a smooth blend of Indie Pop/Rock, Folk, Surf Rock, and Shoegaze, with an oceanic ambiance and a positive message. Since their formation they have released 5 singles, 2 EPs, and 1 full length records and performed over 450 shows across the East Coast, South, and Midwest and have played at many events across the country. Their music has been featured on radio across the United States as well as parts of Europe and has been licensed to the Discovery Networks, Homemade Soul Music, Audiosparx, Roadtrip Nation, and Bring Your Own Board music libraries.

This year, The FoxFires released a trilogy of songs, each one being released on a significant date. The first song, titled “Slowdive”, was released corresponding with Valentine's Day. The second, titled “Matchless Part Two”  was released March 21st for the Spring Equinox. The third and final of the trilogy, “Brooklandia” was released on May the 4th coinciding with International Star Wars Day. “Brooklandia” is a psychedelic track that we can’t get enough of. The rhythmic attitude and chill rock vibe takes the listener on a journey through the hypnotizing and mellow rock sound arrangements. “Brooklandia” has slight undertones of alternative blues and soulful roots. I think “Brooklandia” can be interpreted differently depending on the listeners situation. The pummeling guitar, echoing vocals, surf-rock vibes and overall chemistry on “Brooklandia” are a brilliant indication of what’s to come next for The FoxFires. I highly recommend you check out this track and the entire trilogy Stay on the lookout for The FoxFires.

Hey guys welcome to BuzzMusic! Can you start by introducing yourselves? What role does each of you play within The FoxFires?

Hi, I’m Christian Diana. I’m the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for The Foxfires.

Hey! I’m Adam and I play bass for and manage The Foxfires

Hello! I’m Christian Cordero and I play lead guitar and keys for The Foxfires

Hey guys! I’m Brandon and I have played drums, percussion, and backing vocals for The Foxfires since 2015. I’ll be leaving soon, however on good terms and with the best wishes towards the band and will play a crucial role in helping find their next drummer.

How and when did The FoxFires come to fruition? How did you choose the band name?

We all met at open mics and shows. CC (Christian Cordero) and Adam used to be in a band called The Nightingale Effect in 2011-2013. CD (Christian Diana) was a solo artist after his long stint in the pop punk band Passing Planets. CC and Adam met with CD at an open mic in Ridgewood, NJ and decided to jam one day. We met Brandon after our first drummer left at a house show, when we had just signed to our former label. He really loved our sound and we instantly clicked. He was an obvious choice for us as a band and as people. It’s hard to remember a time when anyone else drummed for us, because I think we really became The Foxfires when he joined the band. Foxfire is folklore terminology for bioluminescence. It’s things like glowing mushrooms and fireflies. It’s very symbolic of being the natural glow in the world. We aspire to be that.

Can you dive into more details on the lyrics of “Brooklandia”? What inspired this song?

Brooklandia was inspired by a very difficult but necessary breakup between CD and his ex-girlfriend. Sometimes, love isn’t enough to be in a relationship and it feels wrong to end a relationship at times. You’re not quite sure what to feel about what’s best for both of you and it can be a truly hollow and uncomfortably uncertain feeling.

What’s the overall theme of your trilogy? What do you hope your fans take away from it?

The trilogy are all songs that were written in, conceived in, inspired in, and recorded in Brooklyn. We got to record it with astute producer Jesse Cannon in Williamsburg this past Fall and it was a surreal experience to be recording what was inspired, quite literally, right down the street. Jesse has a laundry list of great work under his belt and he was an obvious choice of producer for us. Brooklyn, sonically was a large influence on our music and these three songs are essentially a tribute to what really opened many musical doors for us. We hope our fans enjoy it and make it a part of the soundtrack to their lives.

Do you have any hints of tour dates or upcoming show you can talk about?

We have quite a few! So, we may be taking part in a certain famous pop-up show organization in the Fall, but you’ll just have to wait and see. (Wink wink, nudge nudge) Aside from that, we’ll be performing at the Hudson Valley Music Conference Showcase in Kingston, NY, the Rock Out the Dope Opioid Prevention and Awareness Festival, Alchemy Gathering Full Moon Campout, and American Dissonance Festival in Trenton, NJ. We are currently doing a promotion where if you follow our official Spotify account, screenshot it, post it on Instagram and tag us, you can get an exclusive The Foxfires track that we haven’t distributed and it’s arguably just as incredible as our three new singles. We have much more TBA, so please stay tuned. You won’t want to miss it.
