Thank you! I'm happy to be talking with you guys today. Though I wasn't writing for anything specific at the time, creating 'The Pursuit Of It' began at the end of 2021 through the start of 2023 around the theme of growth and change (through my 20s, specifically). I wasn't necessarily trying to make a cohesive project; I was just making songs. I soon realized that this idea of forgiving myself and allowing me to accept my growth at face value was crucial for me to get out. When people listen to that, they feel, above all else, like we are meant to mess up, change our minds, decide something isn't meant for us, explore what is, and get back up again.
How did you harness your voice to connect with your audience on a deeper emotional level throughout this project, and how has this allowed you to convey your storytelling themes effectively?
Honestly, like anything else, the more I do it, the better it feels to me. The more I songwriter and practice the act of vulnerability, the closer I feel to my listeners. I try to remind myself that the more I can invite someone in on what I'm feeling in its most accurate form, the more I can help harness that gap between someone thinking, 'Nobody knows how I feel, and I'm alone' 'Woah, I heard this song randomly, and I feel like it's exactly how I feel.'
"The Pursuit Of It" explores mental health awareness and self-discovery themes. Could you share any specific tracks on the EP where you felt a solid connection to these themes and why?
Oh boy, 'Flower'. This song took us so long to complete. I'm talking years. My friend, co-writer, and producer on this track, Brett (Truitt), and I started this song on a quiet morning in Nashville. It's just taken on so many lives since that original day/writing session. Looking back at that, I do laugh to myself because this song became the perfect depiction of its own lesson: you can change your mind. Accepting who I am and learning how to better myself has been the healthiest choice for both my self-discovery & mental health.
Your upbringing involved being surrounded by Irish and Folk music and growing up alongside your siblings in the entertainment industry. How has this unique background influenced your artistic journey, and what role does family play in your creative process?
Aw, I love this question. From day 1, my parents have been like, 'Go do what you're made to do. It'll be hard and hard to pay for, but we believe in you. The older I get, the more I know how rare it is to be supported in your 'pursuit.' So I've tried to relax my shoulders a bit and remember that there isn't any 'proving' to be done here... and my siblings are 100% both the thing that keeps me grounded (lol, they tell me when they are and are not a fan of the song), and the pieces I feel supported by. Although we all grew up in TV/Film, it was evident that I just loved it more than they did from the jump. I'm grateful they both cheered me on in my continuous running towards this and that I can be a fan of all the rad things they're doing.
As you split your time between Nashville and LA, both vibrant music hubs, how do these locations influence your songwriting and overall approach to music? Have any specific experiences or collaborations in these cities left a mark on your work? What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Splitting time in Nashville, LA, and Europe helps me keep a fresh & creative mind. I love traveling, being alone, and letting my spirit wander because I have such a grounded life at home. I feel that sense of balance at this point in my life. I'm so grateful that my music has taken me to other parts of the world and is growing on its own now; I don't take that lightly.
As far as experiences in other places that may have left a mark, I immediately think of The Netherlands. The chance to tour over there last year (and make more music while doing so) led me to record my next project there. In fact, I'm at the airport now, about to board a flight to Amsterdam, where I will be working for the next month. Thank you so much for the chance to talk about 'The Pursuit Of It.' I'm closing one chapter with this release today, and I look forward to allowing in whatever comes next.
