Will Pegg Is Back With His New Song, “Shiny Shoes"
Will Pegg is a Wellington-based artist who’s music is the culmination of shiny vocals and an early 2000s' influences. Since starting his musical journey in 2011, Will Pegg has performed in the Christchurch Cathedral Choir and is now studying a BA in Commercial Music, while working on an upcoming 16-track album. To hype up for this upcoming album, Will Pegg recently released his single “Shiny Shoes” and this record will feel like a modern throwback.
Will Pegg's incredibly attention-grabbing vocals are holding us close and feel like a silky warm blanket around us. We are loving the dynamic that Will Pegg creates between the verses and chorus, there’s an almost melancholic vibe in the chorus before exploding into harmony heaven in the chorus. The use of imagery in here perfectly paints the picture Will Pegg creates about this perfect person with the perfect smile. “Shiny Shoes” is all about the vocals, it’s got such a vibe to it that has us so hooked and wanting more. This release features a super minimalistic but amazingly groovy and kinda funky organic percussion and bass that perfectly compliments Will’s stunning vocals. Whatever Will is planning for his future releases, we are hyped and can’t wait.

Hi, Will Pegg! Welcome to BuzzMusic! We can’t get enough of your single “Shiny Shoes”! It’s such a fun and vibey tune. What was the inspiration behind writing this? How long did it take for you to write, record, and release it?
Hey BuzzMusic, thanks for having me! The inspiration behind ‘Shiny Shoes’ was from a challenging time in my life when I first moved away from home. I found that my relationship could help me get through tough times and give me the motivation to pursue my music career. I write and produce all of my own music, so it took around one month to get the song ready for release. The writing process actually came about quite quickly, within a matter of hours. You kind of get into the mode and everything just comes to you. The production took so long because I would consider myself over-protective of my art.
We love the contrast you have between the verses and the chorus, the vocal harmony work is amazing. We almost feel like 2000s boy bands were an inspiration for this, what were your specific inspirations from that era that led to your vocal parts?
You are right in saying that 2000s boybands played a part in the vocal production of ‘Shiny Shoes’. I’ve always been a fan of The Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and even One Direction. However, the idea of vocal harmony came to me from a few artists I have been listening to more recently. I especially paid attention to Jon Bellion and Charlie Puth.
The backing track has such a simple but organic groove that is sure to get a party going, what was the process like to create all of these interesting sounds? Did you ever have any challenges with making them?
I create sounds by layering different samples and then pitching them to the right key. I then use my drum machine to program the sounds and this creates a certain rhythmic feel. I decided that I wanted the production of ‘Shiny Shoes’ to be a little bit different from everyday Pop. The biggest challenge was to get all of the sounds to fit together. I managed to do this through my use of frequency balancing so that everything would come together sonically.
We are extremely excited about your upcoming album, how do the songs on it compare to “Shiny Shoes”? Are you trying out any new ideas or approaches during its creation?
‘Shiny Shoes’ is a nice contrast to the rest of the album. However, you can expect to hear sonic examples from this song throughout. I don’t want to give too much away, but I am engineering the album to showcase my love of upbeat emotive music.
What can we expect to see from you throughout 2020?
I can guarantee that there will be five singles over the next five months. Two of these will be on the album. I also have some more exciting stuff in the works, although I can’t give too much away about that yet!
