Your music is deeply personal and often touches on heavy themes. What’s your process for translating real-life struggles into lyrics without holding back? Well, my process always starts with prayer. Especially if I'm feeling some type of way concerning issues in my life, should I say anything, should I not? If I do, will there be an understanding or will I lose friends or family, etc, and as a journalist, comprehensive analysis. The truth is vital to detail. So when writing thoughts that feel all over the place in my mind, I try to condense and tell the story behind those thoughts. In hopes that there's a relatability the audience will have with me. You’ve had an award-winning career in journalism before transitioning into music. How does that background influence your storytelling in hip-hop? In journalism, you should have three crucial skills: Writing skills, research, investigative skills, and the ability to get vital information, conducting interviews. So, with storytelling in hip-hop, I have three skills that I use from my time in journalism, that's vital to explaining news in my opinion. Its creativity, being able to manage conflict with understanding, and lastly, empathy. So by being creative, whether it's words or sounds, I try to give an interesting story that sets up plots, characters, and details. Then comes the conflict. I try to make conflict central to my storytelling. I like tension, I think it's from being a former journalist, lol. But hopefully by the end of the track, I've given a resolution to that conflict. Empathy is just considering the audience's emotions and perspective in hopes they can relate. The one thing people have trouble with is expressing how they really feel about something or someone. I want my music to relay that you don't have to be afraid to say how you feel, especially if the person across from you has no problem just saying anything out their mouth. But in my opinion, responsibility, acceptance, and self-awareness have to play a part in my storytelling process too. If you notice in my music, I take responsibility for my part in creating the conflict and why. As human beings, we have to take ownership of our mistakes with the choices and decisions we have made. Then we'd have a better understanding of why life went this way. It's not always someone else's fault. You mentioned the emotional rollercoaster of the past three years, especially with the loss of your grandmother. How did that impact the way you approached writing and recording this track? Well, I was watching a Kevin Hart special called Reality Check in ‘23, and everything he said was exactly how I felt about life, people and love at that time. He was brutally honest about family, friends and his personal thoughts. That is why you hear certain narratives from that stand-up on the album. I wanted them to convey a particular message that I understood and hope the audience would too. I said "Well, if he can do it, why can't I?" lol. At that time I was dealing with a lot of personal issues with family, friends, and marriage. Then my grandfather died of Covid-19 in ‘23 but I didn't find out until January of last year around my birthday, which is what I talk about in the opening track, Karter Eugene. Then on top of that, my grandmother died in October of last year, and there was so much craziness around that situation, even to this day, which had a lot to do with family. So to make a long story short, I wanted this Album, Sayless Karter, to be a reality check to everyone in my life and the audience. We say crazy things, do crazy things, and as crazy as they may be, we sometimes don't care how far we take it, and it may come off as weird. But it's nothing wrong with saying you're human, and because of trauma in our lives, this is how we decided to walk, act, or justify actions in our lives, but also no excuse, especially when there is help out here. We just have to be open to healing. There’s a raw honesty in your music that isn’t always common in mainstream hip-hop. Do you ever struggle with how much of yourself to reveal in your songs? Honestly, no. Whatever I reveal, as deep as the context may be at times isn't for public opinion or judgment. It's for understanding. I'm a strong believer in God, which you'll hear in this album, because of my grandmother. If you've ever heard my album “Lite-Skinned Jesus”. The most important thing that should have been received from me on that album is I don't care what anyone thinks. I only care about my relationship with God and only he should have any type of judgment about how I carry myself in life. Not people. Especially if they aren't judging the mistakes they've made in life. What’s next for Karl.witaK? Can we expect an album, more singles, or any collaborations in the near future? I'm taking a break. I think I've left enough music in the world for right now lol. But I'm working on a podcast that should be out before the year is out with my brother and fellow rapper Murdalandzown called “Sheetz and Bluntz”. We also have a collaboration album called “Himtoomovement”, which we are currently working on. I'm also going to be doing vignettes on my YouTube channel called “Addies Diaries,” which is basically giving teachings that my grandmother gave me that could help someone else in life. I have one video up so far, so check that out. So just more content, maybe music videos to a lot of my material from the last few years. But my next solo album which I've also been working on is “Addie”. So expect that in January of next year.

Tease captures the thrill of attraction in such a bold and playful way. What was the moment or experience that first sparked the idea for this song? The whole song started with me playing the little “na na na na na na” guitar part. From there, I really wanted to capture the feeling of craving someone so bad that would cause you to beg and do almost anything for their attention and touch, but in a really fun “can’t get enough of you” way. That’s something that I was personally experiencing at the time, and I really wanted this song to express that. This is the first time you’ve used "she/her" pronouns in a song—how important was it for you to make that statement in your music, and what has the response been like from your fans? To me, it was incredibly important to use she/her pronouns when referring to the subject of the song. When I first started writing and releasing music, I was told to keep it neutral so a wider audience would relate and follow my music. As I’ve grown as an artist and a person, I’ve come to realize that we need more LGBTQ+ representation in the music industry, and it’s important to be proud of who you are and show others that it’s ok to be proud of who they are as well. You literally wrote Tease on a plane and performed it live for the first time hours later. That’s some serious pop-punk energy! What was that experience like, and did the audience’s reaction influence the final version of the track? Thank you! The whole experience was so exciting, but also nerve-racking because we literally had zero idea what this song was going to come out sounding like or what the response would be. The first time we played it, I taught the audience to chant the “Na na na na na na” parts and they were so loud and amazing! We continued to play the song like that, with the audience being fully involved in the singing and chanting. We loved how much fun everyone had with it, that we had some friends come into the studio to help replicate the “Na na na” chants in the song for the recording.   You’ve been called a "pop-punk pioneer" by multiple outlets. What do you think sets your sound apart, and how do you keep your music feeling fresh while still paying homage to the scene’s roots? I pull a lot of influence from early 2000s pop punk bands and artists, but I also seek out newer artists to listen to. I love hearing hints of some of the OG pop punk bands mixed in with new sounds and styles and I try to do that with my own music as well. I also think it’s important to not listen to strictly one genre. I find I can create my own unique sound more often when I’m listening to all different types of music. 5. With your EP dropping in March and more new music on the way, what can fans expect from this next era of Chelsea Lyn Meyer? Music that’s raw, honest, and FUN! And songs that make you feel and want to move and sing along. I can’t wait to share my stories with anyone who listens, and I hope they relate to my songs on some level.

I was working on the beat in the studio and the energy from it was electric. I had to deliver a message that was positive but also just me talking real life and feeling like I was coming into a groove as a creative. You collaborated with BOBdAHIPPIE on this song. How did that partnership come about, and what was the creative process like working together? I have worked with BOBdAHIPPIE before on some of his music as his engineer, and as I was working on the song, I knew I needed another sound and gear for it. I called BOB and asked him to come to the studio, played him the song, and saw the fire in his eyes as he said yes! He wrote the chorus right there and recorded it in the same time span. It was amazing and gave the song the missing touch! The track has a powerful energy that feels like an anthem for motivation. How do you want listeners to feel when they hear "My Season," and what do you hope they take away from it? I want listeners to feel like it is their season for sure and to walk into that energy and vibe. Everyone has a season it may not be now but might as well try to be prepared for it and go as if it is now because it will be theirs quicker than they know. As an artist who wears many hats—rapper, singer, producer, and engineer—how does having full creative control impact your music's final sound and message? I always go back to the quote “Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one” Having full creative control is fun and kinda stressful because I know the message I am trying to convey with each and sometimes it doesn’t always play out that way. I have scrapped 1000s of ideas but also have come up with some of the most memorable things as well. I also trust that it will sound good, especially because school helped me refine these skills and make my art the best possible way I can. Looking at your journey from The Perception to now, how has your sound and message evolved, and what can fans expect from you moving forward? The Perception was the seed that started the growth. I always wanted to make music that had relatability, strong messages and a sound that wasn’t dated but different. So fans can expect more music looking to drop an EP and LP this year with more singles and videos!

We (John Colgin, Reid Brannon and I) had just sat down for a writing session. I am not sure which one of us said it, but as we put our phones away at the start of the session, someone said "everyone is in love with their smartphone". We all looked at each other, chuckled and the song seems to have written itself. No AI and that ain't no lie. The song blends country, pop, and folk elements seamlessly. How did you approach the production to achieve that timeless yet contemporary sound? DR FORD, aka Daniel Ford, produces all genres easily and magically. When we first went over the song, there was discussion about folk in a Jimmy Buffett style, then we played it through as Country. We didn't aim to include flavors of pop, but they seemed to work well. The end result was a good blend and an easy listen. You’ve cited influences ranging from Dolly Parton and The Beatles to Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. How did those artists shape the songwriting and storytelling in this track? Putting real life situations to lyric and melody have a certain art and science about them. I am amazed at the works these artists have brought to the masses. It is a challenge to make the story flow and be married to the melody. A worthy goal of any songwriter. Humor and wit play a big role in “Smarter Than Me.” Do you find it challenging to balance comedy and emotional depth in your music? Well, John, Reid and I have a chemistry that seems to spontaneously produce songs that are fun and nuanced. Love with your heart and laugh with your gut. You can't go wrong with those ingredients. With your growing international success, what do you hope listeners take away from this song, and how does it fit into the bigger picture of your evolving artistry? My goal is to keep writing songs that help people find a small amount of time to forget about troubles and enjoy a few moments of life. Laughter is good medicine and I intend to keep writing songs using the pharmacy of fun and laughter for as long as I can.

"Lana Del Rey" is a song that explores the complicated relationship with a country that has let you down. Can you talk about the moment or realization that sparked the idea for this track? Was there a specific event or personal experience that influenced the lyrics? - I wrote this song in the lead-up to the election. One candidate for president had been shot, and the other one stepped down from running again. Things felt super unstable. All I really wanted to say was, "You really like this place? Okay I guess." So many are disenfranchised right now, and I wanted to write about how they're being beaten down by this stuff, but I didn't want it to sound too preachy. That's why I went the route of writing the song as though it were about a toxic relationship. That's a little easier to get into for most people I think, including myself. Your music blends raw, improvised energy with deeply introspective storytelling. How do you strike a balance between chaotic, high-energy performances and crafting thoughtful, emotionally driven lyrics?   I've always liked the idea of there being two shows going on at the same time. There's like the surface-level show of seeing what we do at face value, like screaming and throwing our instruments around, and the ferocity of all that. But then I think there's another show within where we're actually telling stories that aren't hidden in any kind of difficult way. I wanted to make songs that you can just hear AND listen closer to. Outkast's 'Hey Ya!' always comes to mind as a reference. It was this super fun track from my childhood that everybody would dance to. Meanwhile, it's all about feeling eternally stuck in an unhealthy relationship. The song draws inspiration from Lana Del Rey’s depiction of Americana—both its beauty and its contradictions. How do you think nostalgia shapes the way people perceive and critique the present? The past always looks cleaner than it actually was. We're always using this idealized version of the past (and even the future) to shape how we handle the present, as opposed to just appreciating it for how it is. Nostalgia can be propaganda too though, and it's been weaponized for quite a while now in this country. The idea that somehow, things will revert back to this idealized point in time that never existed. Yet, it gives people peace of mind. I think we should actually be less sentimental about things, it sucks to dwell. Working with producer Jack Shirley, who’s well known for his work in rock music, must have brought a unique dynamic to your sound. What was the recording process like, and how did he help shape the vision for ‘Lana Del Rey’? Working with Jack was so exciting for us. When we were in the studio recording, we didn't have anyone lined up yet to mix the songs. However, we kept referencing songs from Jeff Rosenstock that he worked on, like 'We Begged 2 Explode' and 'Nausea'. Separately, I also heard his work on Gouge Away and was like, "wow, this is exactly how I want us to sound.". Jack has a really signature style, he makes you feel like you're in the room as the listener. He and our engineer DJ O'Loane really helped capture the essence of our dynamic and lay it on the track. We've always had this punchy and thrashy wall of sound, and yet they make it sound so warm and full.  Y our live shows are described as unpredictable and very high-energy, with elements like suit-clad performances and instrument destruction. How does your stage presence reflect the themes in your music, and what do you want audiences to take away from your shows?   Our live shows do get dicey sometimes! We improvise every setlist in real time, so every show is a truly unique performance. Tamir and I are always having so much fun onstage, and my favorite thing to see is when people go from looking too cool to care to fully losing their minds. The suits are fun because they make us look more put-together, so when the chaos kicks in, it looks even more messy.
