I like writing about human experiences. Most of my songs come from things that I have gone through or someone I know has experienced something that inspires me. I also pull from events and things that impact our everyday lives. The Price is a tale about two lovers who turn to darkness instead of light to deal with their situation. Divorce can be an ugly thing and drive people who once loved each other to do unspeakable things to one another simply because they are hurt. The Blues & Country often talk about hurt in an expressive way. I wanted to make a song that would showcase both styles. In the music video, we see a guitar literally go up in flames! What was the story behind that fiery scene, and how did it feel to create such powerful imagery? Well, the backstory is Sally is a hard-working nurse who has supported her husband Meeks, who is a Blues player, for years. When she comes home to find Meeks in bed with another woman, she wants to hurt him in the worst way. I wanted the video to start with that opening scene so that the viewers automatically start wondering what happened here. It is also a symbol of the destruction the wrath can cause in any situation. Your voice has this incredible way of blending classic country and delta blues. How do you approach merging these genres to create such a rich, soulful sound? I have to give that credit to my parents, Ed and Theresa Freeman. My parents would play Country and Blues music. I grew up listening to the two styles. I believe what’s inside of a person will come out. So, it is only natural that those two influences would be present in the music I create. When I first thought about writing The Price, I knew I wanted to make a song that was both Country and Blues without one overpowering the other, creating the perfect balance of both genres. Revenge is a major theme in the song—what message do you hope listeners take away about the consequences of anger and vengeance? I want to convey the consequences of anger and vengeance. By emphasizing the emotional turmoil that comes from holding onto wrath, I hoped folks would realize the cost of resentment and how it could impact their peace and relationships. Vengeance is cyclical, people that seek retribution often find that it leads to more pain rather than any positive resolution. In the case of Sally and Meeks, the price was ultimate destruction. The bible tells us that we shouldn’t let the sun go down on our wrath, and to be angry but not sin! I hope the song inspires the choice to choose compassion over vengeance, and that my message resonates in a way where people learn the importance of empathy and understanding when dealing with conflicts. Filming in Monticello, FL added an authentic, gritty feel to the video. What was it like shooting in your home state, and how did the local setting shape the final visuals? I am a Florida Girl through and through. The City of Monticello was absolutely instrumental in helping me create a world within The Price video that felt historic. Shooting at the Old Monticello Jail was amazing and at times a little spooky. It was rumored to be haunted, and you could definitely feel a sense of hopelessness as you walked through the corridors. The walls were full of writings left by the former inmates, some of loss and desperation, but there were also ones that showed hope and resilience. I must give the City of Monticello huge props for helping us make the video a cinematic event.

I hope they truly take the message in and work to help make a change, as this continues to be an issue in our everyday society. I’ve never been one to shy away from hard subject matter in the past as reflected in my previous releases which always have a positive impact with my fans, while each record holds a special meaning to me personally. “Automatic” is just the latest single of mine to showcase this. With your upcoming Pop Rock band project, Chasing Sunday, set to release its first singles in 2025, how does "Ben’s Girlfriend" reflect your musical evolution, and what can fans expect next? Aside from my main genres of contemporary R&B and hip-hop, I wanted to explore my pop/rock vibe with not only “Automatic” but also “Ben’s Girlfriend” which dropped last month. I’ll always evolve and grow with my sound and future projects will be no different.

My ancestors used to guide them in life.  You mention that your music is spiritual and enlightening and that you reach deeper states of creation through meditation, prayer, and smoking. Can you share a moment or experience during the making of Bantu Liberty  where you truly felt connected to that spiritual essence? Feeling and seeing my late mother's spirit on the day of recording solidified that this body of work is truly as special as it feels. You've mentioned the influence of artists like Lauryn Hill, Buju Banton, and Koffi Olomide. How have these legends shaped your sound and approach to blending genres like rap, R&B, and Congolese music in Bantu Liberty ? Lauryn Hills' music has always inspired a type of call to action, as has Buju, for me at least. Merging the intensity of their messages with the charisma and emotion of Congolese sound and then the influence of Toronto's diversity just makes for the fusion that became Bantu Liberty.  "Liberty starts in the mind, reality will follow the ideas you provide it" is a powerful quote. How does this philosophy tie into the message of Bantu Liberty , and what do you hope your listeners take away from it? When the Bantu people and essentially all Indigenous oppressed people change their minds about how they view this world (colonial world), then we can aspire to see true effective change, and ultimately, that's the underlying message of the EP. How do you see this new project as an evolution of your artistry, and where do you want to take your sound and message next? Can you share what the process of writing these deeply personal tracks was like for you? Writing and recording the songs was fairly easy. I had recently gone through what you hear in the music, so turning my pain into an art form was not hard to do. I turned on my laptop and just poured out how I felt about everything that happened since those emotions were still fresh at the time. Were there any moments that were particularly difficult or cathartic to capture? You mentioned that the first half of the album explores the pain and issues of a broken relationship, while the second half focuses on acceptance and self-love. How did you decide to structure the album this way, and what message do you hope this progression sends to your listeners? I structured it this way because the album's first half was already done and wasn't be called "Live n' Learn." It was originally gonna be a heartbreak love story type mixtape, but not only did I want to make the project longer, I was at a better place mentally and emotionally, so I turned that experience into a lesson. The biggest thing I want people to take away from this album is to love yourself completely before pouring too much of yourself into someone else.   In tracks like “Drunk” and “Sober,” you reflect on using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with pain. How has your relationship with mental health and self-care evolved since creating these songs? I think my relationship with those things has evolved because I'm more open to how I'm feeling now. I would push those feelings down and bury them in alcohol and drugs, sometimes, and not open to anyone or talk to anyone about it. However, now I am more in tune with my emotions and I realized that what I do feel is valid and it's okay to express however I feel.   “Used 2 Be Fun” touches on the theme of change and nostalgia. How has your journey as an artist and as a person shaped your perspective on change, both in your career and personal life? I never thought change was a bad thing. I just see it as evolving. Becoming a better artist and person. Although it is unfortunate how people you thought you knew can do one thing and change how you see them completely, not everyone has the same mindset as I do, so I can't hold it against them. It's just another part of life, I think.    What advice would you give to someone going through a similar heartbreak or tough time? Are there any particular songs on the album that you think they should turn to for strength or comfort? My advice is to take your time. Pour into yourself as much as possible and take care of your mental health. I think the song "No Choice" is a good go-to for strength and comfort because it hypes you and makes you feel good. "Let Me Be" is good, too, because it gives that feeling of letting go, and I think that takes strength to do.
