I turned 30 this year, and I feel - I don't know another way to describe it - different. I feel more settled in who I am than ever. So I'm glad this album encapsulates my entire life until this point (and the hopes and longings beyond it) because it feels significant. I didn't set out to create an autobiographical album, but it was cool to realize the songs I wanted on this project and the order in which I wanted them sequenced walk you through my whole life. The title track, "27teen," feels like a pivotal moment on the album. Can you tell us more about what this song means to you? This song is about feeling simultaneously young and mature/grown at the same time. I've loved hearing that even people in their 50s and 60s can relate to it because even though some of the references are specifically from the early '00s (Death Cab for Cutie's record Plans, North Face fleeces, iPad classics with seemingly endless gigabytes), a lot of people can relate to this feeling, just from a different era. It's the beauty in the whole specificity-yields-universality aspect of songwriting. 27 is also a significant marker in my life: it's the age I turned when I moved from Nashville to Austin, the first time I felt like 30 was close, and the age I lost my childhood best friend. "27teen" is this state of nostalgia, angst, and heartbreak brimming up against growth and perspective. How does 27teen differ from your previous album, your absence, a closeness? What sets these two projects apart? Great question! I've been saying that your absence and closeness are a snapshot of what I was going through and wrestling with in my early twenties/post-college phase, whereas 27teen, as you mentioned, is more autobiographical and encompasses all stages of my life. I also think this project explores more genres and just has a little more fun :) Which song from 27teen is your personal favorite, and why? What makes that song so special to you? It's hard to choose since they're so different! But I'll go with "How Lost I'd Find Myself (without you)" because it feels like more of a stretch genre-wise for me, and it was a fun challenge vocally. I also like that it's the song that looks forward - it's about the people in my life, but it was written more about (hopefully) a future person I decide is worth partnering my life with. What did you want listeners to experience when hearing 27teen? What did you want them to take away? I want them to reflect on their own lives, and I want them to feel their feelings. What inspired you to create a Halloween-themed dance track? Thanks for having me back! 'Tis the season, right?! I am a huge horror/Halloween person, so it only felt right to make another Halloween-themed song. I have one from years ago, and it felt like it was time to make one that's even more fun! Your musical background is quite diverse. How did you approach blending your various influences into this electronic house sound? Thank you! I have always believed in sharing all of my musical backgrounds! It's fun to try new genres and revisit old ones. This is a great question. In order to blend my various influences and sounds, I made sure to throw signature things into the song still. For example, there are certain things I love to do vocally in a song, even if it's just background vocals for people to notice, and then they're like, "Yup, this is a Giselle song." Even at the end of this song, I included the "ahhs" to pay homage to my original training in opera! The lyrics of "Vampire" paint a vivid picture. Can you tell us more about the story you're telling in this song? I'm so glad the lyrics did that! To share more in-depth, I was heavily inspired to write this song because I have always been a fan of Vampires! I loved shows like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood growing up. I was a huge Twilight fan as a kid, and I still am. NO SHAME IN THAT! HAHA. I also remember seeing Blacula for the first time when I was young, as well as Vampira (Old Dracula), and it made me so happy to see people like me as Vampires. To see representation. So, I wanted to keep that representation going. It's not often we see Black Vampires as the center focus of horror films or horror-inspired music videos. To paint more of a picture, this Vampire (played by me) is a ripper. If you've watched TVD or you know about the lore of vampires, it's believed that some cannot really control their hunger, or they choose to "turn off" their emotional switch. My vampire has done just that. She lures you in, even though you know something's wrong... you can't really figure it out UNTIL it's too late! This vampire craves love, but her hunger doesn't allow it. Even the people she has fallen in love with don't last very long. She can't hide from her truth, from her secret. She's a vampire... and you're going to DIE! How does "Vampire" stand out from your previous releases? I would say this song stands out for many reasons. One, I was just having a blast the entire time. Not to say I don't have a blast with my other songs! But some of my other songs are emotionally heavy. This song wasn't. It was just written because of a pure love of horror and vampires. I even got to make my directorial debut with this music video! My entire vision was brought to life exactly as I saw it. That's a dream come true! I think Vampire also stands out because it's a track that makes you want to dance! I think it's beyond just a Halloween song, but a song that will get played year-round due to how enjoyable it feels! What was your favorite part about creating such a fun, powerful song like "Vampire?" Which parts of the process did you enjoy most? I have so many favorite parts... One of them was working in the studio with my producer, Jordan. I told him what I wanted and explained that I wanted the sound to be like an 80s synth-pop type of instrumental. He provided that! While we worked together, I even asked if we could have sound effects of people screaming in the background (which you hear), and it was so much fun! At the start of the songs, there's this sound of a "neck being ripped," which is so gross but so cool, haha! It really sells the song. There's also a cool sound effect of a sword at the bridge, which we used for the creepy impact and to provide the listener with a cue that the song would transition back into the chorus! My other favorite part of creating this was filming the video with an awesome team, Dark Crown Films! They respected and understood my vision perfectly, and it was so much fun to direct camera motions, actors, and more! As I said before, to see my vision come to life spot on was a real treat! Lastly, I'd say writing this song was so fun because it easily came to me. I had just finished an episode of TVD (I'm rewatching for what I think is the 50th time, haha), and I went into my music room and just sat down and wrote down this storyline. I felt like the song was so powerful, having my daughter's vocals on it. I'll always be able to look back at that moment, but the delivery and passion behind my lyrics make the song resonate with others. We love your collaboration with Chairman Allen on "Blackness." How did this partnership come about, and what was your main goal with this song? Chairman Allen is my blood brother. We've been making music together since 2015. My main goal for the song was to express my cultural awareness and also bring real hip-hop vibes. I already knew my brother Allen would bring the perfect energy! I also got the perfect voiceover for the intro and outro by my brother Lucky XL. How is Reconstruction different from your 7-track 2023 album, Veracity? Veracity was the spiritual awakening! Reconstruction is the application Veracity was super revolutionary, and that album was created during my journey working with Healthy Hood Chicago. Reconstruction was a year-long process, and I applied so many things I learned to my own life and family, fully embracing my past, present, and future. The lyrics matured, and I emotionally tapped into a deep place and took listeners on a ride in reconstruction. I felt like I took the time to perfect my craft, and I sat with these songs for a long time, knowing the album would be incredible. Reconstruction also took it to the next level regarding production, storytelling, and features. As a community architect in the music scene, how do you hope Reconstruction will impact your listeners and fellow artists? I hope reconstruction will inspire creatives to set a standard with their art. I hope my vulnerability will motivate others to do so with their art. I hope this album proves you can make good, catchy, fun music that slaps while still talking about real-life situations and triumphs. What inspired you to write such a powerful anti-love song? I absolutely adore songs that feel like riding in a car with the windows down, and that feeling inspired this song! I wanted to create a carefree vibe, and based on past relationships, it came out as an anti-love anthem.  What was your songwriting process like for "Love Of Your Life"? What message or story did you want to get across? This song was written in two days and really kind of fell out on the page! Once we had the initial melody, it was just playing around with ways to convey the “I’m good on my own” feeling. The production of "Love Of Your Life" is fantastic. Can you tell us about the process of creating the track's vibrant sound? The production is pretty much solely thanks to my husband, Ed Thrower. I brought him a chord progression and some ideas, and he took them and ran. We wanted to imitate Chappell Roan’s sound with our own twist and found that 80s synths were the way to go. Everything was done in Logic and in our home studio. You've mentioned being influenced by artists like Fleetwood Mac and Taylor Swift. How do these inspirations come through in "Love Of Your Life?" I draw inspiration from both Taylor's and Fleetwood’s writing. Catchy hooks, play-on-words, and catty phrases are some of my favorite things to use. If listeners could take one thing away from "Love Of Your Life," what would you want that to be? This song truly is all about self-love and having fun. In this world of trouble, my music gets me through.” For someone who’s had so many iconic experiences and moments in the industry already, what’s your fondest music-related memory? I’ll never forget my band, The Ides of March, opening for Led Zepplin just after our song "Vehicle" hit number one. After the show, Robert Plant invited us 19-year-olds to our first rock' n'roll party! As someone who’s already accomplished so much, what goals or changes do you want to achieve through your music? I’d like to inspire positivity, the joy of being on this earth together, and the making of the most of every day. What inspired you to take that initial step to seriously pursue music, and what motivates you to make music now? Initially, we emulated our favorite groups and artists. The first song we ever played was Hound Dog by Elvis Presley. Then came the Ventures. Then, of course, the Beatles. Then, we started writing our own songs, combining all those elements with our own creative spin. What’s next for Jim Peterik, and is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? It always blows me away when someone comes up to me and tells me how much my music was like the soundtrack of their life.
