We love your new release, “Kissing Other Girls.” We know how cathartic this process made you feel, so what was it like when you heard the finished version of “Kissing Other Girls” for the first time? What was going through your mind when you knew you had the definitive master? This song was really amazing to make. I was looping the synth part on my computer for a few minutes, and then the entire song practically fell out of me in one sitting. That's usually rare for me; I usually go back and edit and change things over the course of a few days, but I just felt *it* right when I finished writing the song. Obviously, adding more glossy production and hearing the final master was incredible, but I knew I had something special while I was writing the track. What inspired you to start taking music seriously, and what continues to inspire you today? I really love writing and conveying relatable stories through catchy melodies and honest lyricism. I love that I'm able to write earworm "bangers" that have a story in them. My favorite thing about pop music, though, has always been pop culture icons and their amazing performance abilities (Prince, Madonna, Lady GaGa, Michael Jackson). I always get so awestruck rewatching iconic performances. I always throw on Gaga's 2009 VMA performance of Paparazzi whenever I'm feeling low, and it completely re-inspires me. What do you want your fans to feel when they hear your music? I want them to feel a sort of release. I always describe my music as having a 'dancing through the pain' quality, and I feel like there's a sort of catharsis in hearing someone sing about something relatable. I love the collective "we're all in this together" feeling that music brings out of people. I think that this song can be relatable to anyone who has ever felt betrayed and lied to by a partner. What’s your fondest music-related memory, and what are you most excited for the rest of the year? My fondest music-related memory was a show I did earlier this year where there were people in the audience that I didn't know that were singing the words to my songs. It felt like a special step forward for me. I'm excited to release another track or two in the upcoming year. I'm sitting on a lot of unreleased, finished material, so I can't wait to put it out into the world. What’s next for you, and is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? I'm still actively creating. I think I want 2 or 3 more songs completed for my full-length project that I'd love to release sometime in 2025. Welcome to Buzz, MC Zappa! We're loving the new visuals for "It's All A Game." What made you decide to create a video for this track five years after its release? Thank you! It's good to be back. I'm really not sure why the timing was the way it was. I never really thought about filming any videos before last year, when I filmed "Call The Law." All I can say is that around July of this year, something started to persistently tug at my mind, making me feel strongly compelled to do another video. I had been cycling a couple of ideas in my mind as far as which song to capture. "Hardcore" from the same album was a strong contender at one point. But then late one night, at like 1 or 2 A.M., I just started listening to my whole catalog on Apple Music. I got to "It's All A Game," and the lyrics struck me. I remember thinking that even though I had written this song five years ago, not only did it foreshadow my spiritual awakening, but it was the realest and most relevant song I've ever written. I told myself, "This is the one; we've got to shoot this one." The video for "It's All A Game" has a distinct retro feel, shot on a vintage Sony camcorder. How does this visual style complement your Bit-Hop sound? I've begun to develop a bit of an obsession with vintage cameras [laughs]. Not too long after we shot the video, I bought a Canon AZ-814 from 1967. But no, this visual style complements Bit-Hop perfectly because it represents nostalgia and retro-ness with a healthy dose of anachronism. In this way, both my videos and my music are similar. Yes, the CCD-TRV65 is from 1998, which makes the video look like it was made in the 90s. Yet in the video, we can see a PS5 hooked up to a 43-inch flatscreen, which obviously was not available in '98. Yes, the music sounds as if it was made in the 90s. Yet there are lines such as "problems keep poppin' up like a titty at the Super Bowl", a reference to a controversy that wouldn't happen 'til 2004. In a way, this visual style with retro cameras represents my own worldview and how I see the world. Yes, I live in this modern world, but in many ways, I do not feel as if I am truly a part of it. We couldn't help but notice the pendant that appears around 3:17 in the "It's All A Game" video. Can you tell us more about its significance? Ah yes. The symbol on my necklace (יהוה‎) in that scene is called the Tetragrammaton. It is the personal name of God, as revealed in the Holy Bible (Psalm 83:18). It is rendered in English as YHWH and typically pronounced "Yahweh" or "Jehovah," but most modern Bible translations have wrongly removed His name and replaced it with the title "LORD." Most people do not know that God/the Lord has a personal name, and I wanted to make people aware of it. "It's All A Game" draws some powerful parallels between life and video games. How has your perspective on this theme evolved since you first wrote the song? In many ways, the analogy has become even more poignant with every passing year. One part, which I didn't really touch on in the song, concerns the collection of money and possessions. In any video game, eventually, you'll make more money than you'll ever be able to spend. Eventually, you'll buy every item, find every collectible, and acquire every weapon. What then? And all the while, you're racking up points. But they're useless! They're just meaningless statistics intended to give you a false sense of accomplishment. Is this not life in a nutshell? This parallel is very significant to me because in the years following "It's All A Game," I fell into a DEEP depression, which I vainly tried to cure by engaging in (among other things) unhealthy, compulsive shopping. This did not work; the more stuff I obtained, the deeper the depression got. Honestly, I think of almost everything in my daily life in terms of video games. It helps me to keep things in perspective. For example, as an autistic person, sometimes I have a lot of difficulty with change, especially making it. But then I think to myself, how do I benefit myself by staying in the same part of the map and performing the same daily tasks? Am I not devolving myself from a protagonist to an NPC by doing this? I may have some trepidation about things not going how I want them to. But also, with trepidation comes strength and skill. Are we to avoid the levels that were always too hard for us? Or do we tackle them head-on, seeking new challenges to both use our skills and obtain new ones? Which one we choose determines who we are. What was your favorite part about bringing "It's All A Game" back to life in the form of a music video? What moments or experiences did you enjoy most? My favorite part would have to be either costume design or location scouting. I absolutely love everything related to clothing and fashion, so I loved curating the outfits I wore in the video. I believe every part of an outfit in filmmaking should convey meaning and symbolism. There is no scrap of clothing in the video that doesn't have significance. My favorite experience was filming the scenes for verse 3 on my staircase. I felt that the scenes with me sitting on my staircase with my boombox were very Hip-Hop, indicative of my medium and the era to which I am paying homage. Most people probably don't know, but I was heavily inspired by the 1983 video for "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in various ways, and the boombox scenes in verse 3 are no exception. Initially, I was wearing a red Kangol in that scene (mad shouts to my good sis T'aisha for suggesting that one and being the camerawoman), but I had a mishap with the camcorder, and accidentally taped over an entire afternoon's worth of work; only a few seconds of the original survived. I think that, growing up, the songs that I had always loved the most were songs about women's empowerment, taking back, and owning their strength. Trigger is a song that blossomed from that very concept. The gun imagery in "Trigger" is really striking. How did you come up with that as a metaphor for standing up for yourself? I love songs that have a hook that isn’t necessarily direct. A hook that’s either a play on words, a metaphor, or some other form of indirect lyrics. Those are my favorites because the meaning is left up for interpretation by the listener. For this song, specifically the lyrics, pretty much came to me, and the line, “Load and pull the trigger,” is the metaphor I am talking about. It could be taken literally, but in my definition, it's not literal; however, it is the idea of executing, whether taking back your power, using your voice, or standing up for yourself. Pulling the Trigger is the action of doing just that. "Trigger" has a strong country-rock vibe. How does this song represent your musical style compared to your other tracks? Trigger is definitely a song that stands out when compared to the rest of my songs, but I think it is one of the songs that best represents who I am as an artist. Songs that are powerful with a deeper back story to them are songs I love to listen to, so Trigger is a song that I hope gives the same experience to others as well. You've overcome some major challenges in your life. How does that experience influence your songwriting, especially on a track like "Trigger?" I feel that what I have overcome influences my songwriting because everything is deeper than what’s on the surface (in my lyrics). As I mentioned, I love the deeper side of things; however, I want my songs to be relatable to everyone. When I listen to my music, I will always know the story behind why I chose the words I did and the story that is linked to that song, but until I share that, no one would know, and because of that, listeners have a way of making my songs their own. Trigger for me is taking back my power and freedom outside of everything I have gone through and being grateful for every moment and blessing I have been given. What do you hope listeners take away from "Trigger?" Is there a specific message or feeling you want them to experience? Strength. The biggest thing I want to push with Trigger is Strength. Welcome to Buzz, Dread Fury! We’re blown away by the scope of Devil’s Advocate or Heaven’s Prophet. What inspired you to create such an ambitious double album? Thanks for having me on Buzz again. For years, I’ve been toying with the idea of the inner conflict we all face as humans and wanted to create an album that told that story. As I love creative writing, I also enjoyed the idea of writing a narrative to help drive the album. I had been listening to double albums like “Sign ‘O’ The Times” by Prince and “Songs In The Key Of Life” by Stevie Wonder for inspiration. I also listened to “What’s Going On?” by Marvin Gaye, “There’s A Riot Goin’ On” by Sly & The Family Stone, and “Curtis” by Curtis Mayfield. They were all albums that allowed their creators to create without being restricted, and that was what I was going for with Devil’s Advocate or Heaven’s Prophet. Devil’s Advocate or Heaven’s Prophet feels like two distinct journeys. How did you balance the “Devil’s Advocate” and “Heaven’s Prophet” sides? It felt quite natural. In designing the narrative, I had to ensure that each disc had a cohesive narrative so that the listener’s attention stayed gauged. With the journey starting as the protagonist being lured into this party and then meeting the girl of his dreams to going to absolute hell, I needed to balance that with him learning his lessons and then achieving redemption. So it’s actually one whole journey. From darkness to light would be the perfect analogy. Adding the interludes gives the album more context, too, so the listener knows what has taken place up to that point. As a one-man band, what was your process for creating such a diverse range of sounds across 26 tracks for Devil’s Advocate or Heaven’s Prophet? It was rather different this time around. I would devise and record ideas for the music, laying down the basic tracking – Drums, Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, etc. I did start this around 2020. But then I would struggle with getting lyrics, so some songs would be left until later on. Songs such as “Could Be Me,” “At This Moment In Time,” “Devil’s Advocate,” and “Codeine Cocktail” would be sitting there for a long time without lyrics. I would then record some new tracks, and then the lyrics and melodies would come to me out of the blue, and I would add them to these tracks. So it was about making it sound right. My good friend, Nanette Lee, plays cello on “30 Pieces”, “Soon, We Can All Go Home Again,” and “Live On.” I would record her parts after I had done the basic tracks, and it was really fun. I loved how her cello adds a different dynamic to those tracks. My favorite artists have always been eclectic, and having that allows for making such an album as it then keeps the listener guessing as to what will come next. When I finally sent the track off for mastering, I was glad because I could’ve easily made a triple album the way I was going. “Sinner’s Banquet” really stands out as a bridge between the two halves. Can you tell us more about how this track came together? I remember rehearsing in the Engine Rooms in Bow back in 2022 sometime – I think it might’ve been August – and I had this groove and chorus in my head that I laid down on my loop pedal at that very moment. I saved it and then recorded it on a portable mini-recorder. I was singing nonsense lyrics not to lose the melody. As I went home, I listened to it, and then I recorded the basic track really quickly. It was all quick for drums, guitars, bass guitars, and synths. The lyrics were really quick, too. I imagined God speaking to the protagonist and telling him everything wrong with this party he went to at the start of the album and wrote it all down. I did the lyrics in one take, and once I listened to the recording, I thought, “I think I got something here.” At the start of 2023, I started playing it live to test it, and it took off with the audience. Now, it’s the song that they want me to play live, and it is now my most streamed track. Totally mind-blowing, haha. What do you hope listeners take away from the experience of Devil’s Advocate or Heaven’s Prophet as a whole? I hope listeners take away that we all have that duality within us, that all tough times end at some point, and that we all have our redemption moment. But most importantly, I hope they take away that albums are a huge part of music and they take you on a journey and tell you a story. Stick with the process, and you will be rewarded. You only know what you have until it's gone is something I've had to deal with a lot in my past, so that's what I tried to portray here: the feeling of giving up and putting myself first. Blending Neo-Soul, Alt R&B, and Afro-Soul so seamlessly, can you talk about how you developed this unique sound and what inspires you to mix these genres? Honestly, my sound is just what I've tried and failed to come up with. Those are all genres that I enjoy; they make me feel something, which I feel is the point of music. I just want people to feel what I'm saying, so I've tried to hone my music around that. Can you please walk us through the creative process of building the sound for this track? Building my EP with a song about being fed up was the goal. My producer and I were just trying to create something with a lot of attitude. We kind of play off of each other. It is a mixture of real experience and my own reserved feelings. You’ve cited Rihanna and The Weeknd as key influences. How have they shaped your music, and are there other artists or experiences that have greatly impacted your sound? The Weeknd has been my favorite artist since I was 11 years old. I've always been inspired by his never-letting-his-sound-stagnate approach and his continued attempts to evolve to the next level. Rihanna is an inspiration, yes, musically, but more so for coming from the same place and not conforming to what others would deem to be the safer route, just chasing your dreams and, on top of that, succeeding. The only other artist I take a lot of inspiration from currently is Frank Ocean. His older music has so much personality that it's impossible to replicate, and that's what I strive for. With support from platforms like Jamz Supernova and Clash, your music is reaching audiences worldwide. How has it felt to see this international recognition, and what’s next for you as an artist? It's been surreal, but I'm incredibly critical of myself, so I know I still have a long way to go. I want to release my third EP at the end of this year and continue to make the best music I can for all my listeners and friends. Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I feel like everyone can relate to a time when they don’t have enough to keep up with the rest of the world. I know I get stuck in the comparison game and forget the true meaning of LIVING. My friend Lucas and I were getting together to write, and both were feeling low about the entertainment industry and how hard it is to enjoy it some days. We both decided enough is enough and that we should just quit our bellyaching and focus on the fantastic things happening in our lives and how lucky we are to wake up every day and create things. Our goal was to write a song that embraced the true meaning of happiness and living life to the fullest. We wanted to write a song that we would listen back to in 10 years, be proud of, and be reminded to look for the good in everything. I know I need that reminder, especially today when life feels notably harder than it used to. I think we wrote this song because we genuinely needed it ourselves. Your songwriting is incredibly vivid and detailed. Can you please walk us through your creative process when writing this song? How do you translate your experiences into such evocative lyrics? First of all, thank you I’m blushing, haha. Second, every song is so different and usually starts with something I’m going through. This particular song started with being stuck in this constant flow of feeling like I couldn’t keep up with life, worrying about making my next payments and comparing myself to other artists doing way better than me. I don’t normally start by writing the first verse, but in this case, I really wanted to grab people with ‘I count my coins for gas and bread, but I count my blessings too.’ It just came out of nowhere and set the pace for the rest of the song, and to be honest, it really does embody the sentiment of ‘Rich in Dreams.’ It is very hard not to let the weight of the world pull you down in this downward spiral, and I think we forget how easy it is to reflect on the good things we have and realize how ‘rich’ we truly are. I wanted to put that feeling into a song, and I think we did a darn good job! How do you balance maintaining the authenticity of folk-pop while also pushing creative boundaries in your music? I think maintaining authenticity is hard in any genre. Having written in straight-up pop, pop/punk, and folk/pop… it’s hard to make sure that you balance inspiration and the story you feel like you must tell through your music. I think the most important part about creating music is reminding yourself why you’re doing it. I know for me I care about making something people want to listen but ultimately it has to align with my truth. Pulling in inspiration from other artists but also not washing myself out too much as an artist is a constant battle. How do you hope your listeners will connect with the song on an emotional level, and what message do you want them to take away? I really hope that anyone who listens to this song is reminded that there is far more to life than keeping up with the joneses or whatever number is in your bank account. Truly being rich in life is spending time with those you love and making memories that will last a lifetime. You don’t need a lot to be rich in life; sometimes, you don’t need anything at all. Looking forward, what dreams and goals do you have for your music career, and how does "Rich In Dreams" set the tone for what’s to come in your artistic journey? It is really hard to not get overwhelmed with dreams and goals in this type of industry, especially when so much of it feels out of our control. I obviously would love to see the song be heard by more people and have an impact on listeners. What inspired you to create this track? Kross was written while I was watching "Sunday Service Live at Coachella" on YouTube. Basically I thought about our journey through music and with all the negativity we’ve come across - and how we still continued to push through with our faith and belief in ourselves. "KROSS" has such a unique blend of genres. How did you go about blending rap, rock, and punk in one song? Each member comes from a different background of musical taste. From punk/rap/metal/pop etc, we just blended everything we grew up on and love. The music video for "KROSS" is deeply immersive. What was the concept behind it, and what was your favorite part of the filming process? The concept behind the video was to give the viewer a preview of what they could see if they were to come to a show. We wanted to finally showcase who we are for the people who haven’t seen or heard us live before. I’d have to say our favorite part was just filming in general. This is our first of many music videos we have ever shot as a band. You’ve built a solid reputation with your live performances. How do you translate that same energy into the studio when recording a song like "KROSS?" It’s quite easy for us to translate our live songs into records because we’ve played and practiced them so many times. Once we hit the studio to record the song, it’s more natural and flows better. I suggest practicing your song over and over again before hitting the studio so you’re not wasting your time or the engineer's time. Does "KROSS" give us a taste of your upcoming debut EP? How does it fit into the overall theme or sound of the project?
