For independent artists, landing a festival slot rarely starts when the lineup drops. By then, it’s usually way too late.
Applications for the 2027 festival season are already beginning to open across the United States, Canada, and Europe, giving independent artists a chance to get their music in front of festival bookers months before next summer arrives. Some opportunities are accepting submissions right now, while others are scheduled to open later in 2026.
And these aren't all tiny local stages. The list includes major international discovery events like SXSW, ESNS and Tallinn Music Week alongside regional festivals actively creating space for independent and emerging talent.
If playing more live shows is part of your 2027 plan, these are 16 opportunities worth having on your radar before 2026 is over.
SXSW — Austin, Texas
Few showcase opportunities carry the same industry weight as SXSW. The Austin festival welcomes both signed and unsigned musicians from around the world, with applications open across genres.
The 2027 SXSW Music Festival runs March 15–21, placing selected artists throughout Austin's network of venues for official showcases attended by fans and music industry professionals. Applications are currently open through November 20, 2026, making this one artists shouldn't leave until the last minute.
Gussapolooza Music & Arts Festival — Ontario, Canada
Gussapolooza has built its identity around independent and emerging music, making it one of the more accessible Canadian opportunities on this list.
The festival welcomes original artists across a wide range of genres, with applications for its 2027 edition currently open. Applicants are encouraged to have original material ready alongside a live-performance video. Exact 2027 festival dates have yet to be announced.
Ignite the Arts Festival — Penticton, British Columbia
Musicians aren't the only creatives taking over Penticton for Ignite the Arts. The multidisciplinary festival brings together live music, visual artists, performers and other creatives for a weekend of music, art and culture.
The 2027 festival takes place March 26–28, and artist applications are currently open. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2026.
Sanford Porchfest — Sanford, Florida
Forget the traditional festival stage. Sanford Porchfest transforms residential porches throughout the community into performance spaces for a day of live music.
The 2027 festival takes place February 27, with independent musicians across genres able to apply. It's a much more community-driven opportunity than some of the industry showcases on this list, but that can make it particularly relevant for developing artists looking to expand their live audience.
Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival — Birmingham, England
Despite a lineup that regularly includes established names, Birmingham's Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival also creates opportunities for emerging performers through its artist application process.
The 2027 festival is scheduled for July 9–11, with applications to perform currently open. Naturally, this one makes the most sense for artists operating somewhere within the jazz, funk, soul and adjacent genre worlds.
Will McLean Music Festival — Brooksville, Florida
Independent folk, acoustic, Americana and singer-songwriter artists should have the Will McLean Music Festival on their radar.
Taking place March 12–14, 2027, the Florida festival has a strong connection to the state's musical heritage and community. Performer applications are open through September 30, 2026, giving artists a relatively short window to get their submissions together.
ESNS — Groningen, Netherlands
For artists eligible to apply, ESNS is easily one of the biggest opportunities here.
The European showcase festival brings emerging talent into Groningen alongside thousands of music professionals, creating an environment built around discovery and international industry connections. The 2027 edition runs January 13–16, and applications remain open through September 1, 2026.
There is one major restriction: the current open call is for European artists, so international artists outside Europe shouldn't assume they're eligible.
WAMA Pickersfest — Washington State
Artists working in folk, bluegrass, Americana, roots and acoustic-driven music have another potential home at WAMA Pickersfest.
The festival is geared toward the kinds of artists who can make an intimate, musicianship-focused live environment work. Applications for the 2027 festival are open through October 31, 2026, while exact 2027 festival dates are still to be announced.
JOLT! Performing Arts Festival — Columbia, South Carolina
JOLT! sits outside the traditional music-festival mold, which is exactly why certain independent artists should pay attention.
Its programming combines music with experimental and contemporary performance, creating an opportunity for artists whose work crosses disciplines or pushes beyond a conventional band-on-stage setup. The 2027 festival runs January 22–24, with applications open through August 31, 2026.
Twyfest — Twyford, England
Twyfest is a free community music festival that opens its stage to bands, solo performers, and DJs. The 2027 edition takes place June 19, and its Apply to Play submission process is currently live. Artists can submit their music and information directly to organizers for consideration.
Victoria at Dusk — Victoria, British Columbia
Victoria at Dusk combines music with light installations, public art and performances throughout downtown Victoria, creating another option for artists interested in something beyond a conventional music festival.
The festival welcomes musicians, DJs, performers and sound artists, with the 2027 edition taking place February 19–21. Applications are open through September 1, 2026.
Blue Ox Music Festival — Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Blue Ox has become an established destination for bluegrass, roots and Americana music, making its artist submission period one worth watching for independent acts working within those scenes.
2027 band submissions are expected to open in fall 2026. Exact festival dates and the final submission deadline have yet to be announced, so artists interested in applying should start preparing their live materials now rather than waiting for the application to appear.
Mile of Music — Appleton, Wisconsin
Mile of Music is practically built for music discovery. The festival takes over downtown Appleton with original live music performed throughout numerous venues, putting independent artists at the center of the event.
The 2027 festival is scheduled for August 5–8, with new-artist submissions expected to open in fall 2026. For artists with a strong live set and original catalog, this is one worth bookmarking now.
Beaches International Jazz Festival — Toronto, Ontario
Don't let the word "jazz" make you scroll past this one too quickly. Toronto's Beaches International Jazz Festival has historically programmed a broader mix of music than its name alone might suggest, giving both emerging and established performers opportunities throughout its programming. The 2027 festival is scheduled to run July 2–25, with artist applications opening October 1, 2026.
Tallinn Music Week — Tallinn, Estonia
For independent artists interested in taking their music overseas, Tallinn Music Week is one of the strongest opportunities on this list. The international discovery festival welcomes artists of all genres from across the globe, creating an opportunity to perform in front of fans and international music professionals. The 2027 music festival runs April 8–10, and artist applications close October 26, 2026.
Mariposa Folk Festival — Orillia, Ontario
For developing Canadian artists, Mariposa's Emerging Artist Showcase offers something especially valuable: a potential pathway onto the main festival lineup.
Applications for the 2027 Emerging Artist Showcase run November 2–30, 2026, with selected musicians performing at the showcase on April 10, 2027. Artists chosen through the program can potentially earn a performance opportunity at the main Mariposa Folk Festival.
Start Preparing Before Applications Open
Festival applications can look deceptively simple, but a submission form isn't where the work starts. Artists should already have strong live footage, updated photos, current streaming and social profiles, a concise bio and a clear idea of what makes their live show worth booking.
More importantly, check every festival's official application page before submitting. Deadlines, eligibility requirements, fees and festival dates can change, and some opportunities are genre, nationality or location-specific.
There are thousands of artists chasing festival slots every year. Waiting until 2027 to start looking for 2027 shows is already putting yourself behind.
For independent artists serious about playing more stages next year, the application season has already started.
