Alexandra John, the musical duo formed by twin siblings Liza and Weston Cain, immerses listeners through their hypnotic indie-electro pop sound. Their music, combining feminine and masculine energies, addresses common human experiences such as anxiety, addiction, grief, and loss. After launching their first EP, "Healing," a product of confinement during the pandemic, Alexandra John is advancing in the music scene with their upcoming single, "Lonely Night," set to be released on Friday, June 9th.
"Lonely Night" showcases the duo's ability to blend multiple influences into their music. The track infuses an 80's disco-pop vibe with a laid-back drum pattern and mesmerizing guitar melodies, resulting in a sound reminiscent of Glass Animals and Massive Attack's musical styles. The lyrics relate to the feelings of loneliness and the longing for escapism, conveying hope. The song suggests that one can discover inner peace by embracing the present's uncertainty.
To complement the music's auditory aesthetic, the "Lonely Night" music video provides a visual concept inspired by the disco and soul eras, which many would deem as “the good old days.” Washed with vibrant neon colors and diffused crowd-filled landscapes, the video captures the highs and lows of a night out, ranging from exhilaration to isolation. As viewers follow Liza and Weston through the story, they witness a representation of solitude that embodies the band's message: it is through navigating loneliness that one can truly discover themselves. With the release of "Lonely Night," Alexandra John delivers a powerful message while artfully blending nostalgic music and contemporary sound elements.
Welcome to BuzzMusic, Alexandra John, and congratulations on your latest release, "Lonely Night." Can you start by telling our readers the story behind your artist name?
As twins, we wanted to pick something that felt authentic & close to each of us. Alexandra John is our middle name combined & represents both the feminine & masculine energies we both carry throughout our music.
What Pop, Disco-Funk, and Soul-Lounge elements inspired you when producing "Lonely Night?"
We love taking sounds from previous decades & putting a modern spin on it. There’s a sound from those times that is nostalgic yet timeless. In particular, we love adding brass to our records as it takes our sound to another level. We use live horns recorded by our friends 504 Horns, musicians: Jason Parfait & Ian Smith.
Is there a piece of music or an artist that has influenced your sound?
Growing up, our parents played various music, but some of our favorites that influenced our sound include Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Hall & Oates, Bee Gees & Elton John. A few more modern artists that have inspired our sound are Daft Punk, Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris & Dabeull. All these artists & more had a part in influencing our sound.
How has your approach to songwriting evolved since your debut EP, "Healing?"
We have maintained the root of our original sound while honing in the most organic sound when creating new music.
How do you hope your music impacts your listeners?
We hope to reach our listeners with elements of being introspective and giving them an escape. Ultimately, our goal is to take our listeners on a sonic journey while becoming a part of a soundtrack to their lives.
