Welcome to BuzzMusic Desarae Dee chilly cheers to “Chilly Timing” What inspired the composition of "Chilly Timing?" Is there a specific story or emotion that you wanted to convey through this track?
It’s great to be back again! "Chilly Timing" is essentially an ode to Winter and the “chilliness” that it brings. I’ve always wanted to create a song that emulates winter and ice in some way, and I'm glad I could do that with this song. I wanted to convey the “ice cold” and the “winter winds” that make the winter season what it is.
"Chilly Timing" has a relaxing and mellow vibe, much like a winter holiday by a cozy fireplace. How do you create such a warm and comforting atmosphere through your music? Are there any specific techniques or influences that help you achieve this?
That relaxed and mellow vibe has much to do with my chord progressions, tempo and sound choices, and mood when I created this song 2 1/2 years ago - which was relaxed and that moment. Normally before I write anything, I Channel my mood and the type of vibe I want to portray in my music.
Speaking of sounds, you are known for blending different genres to create your own unique sound. Can you discuss the fusion of styles present in "Chilly Timing?" How do you decide which genres to incorporate into your music?
"Chilly Timing" is a mixture of Jazz, Neo-soul, electronic and cinematic sounds. I’m primarily a jazz piano player, so the chord progressions will automatically give any of my jazz songs a feel. I put my heart and soul into my music, hence the Neo-Soul influences - mainly from the E. Piano and Rhodes sounds heard throughout. The cinematic sounds come from the string sounds that come in every so often to emulate a “winter winds” feel, and the electronic feel comes from the various synth patterns. The drums and the bass provide a syncopated, off-beat rhythmic feel as the winter season is unpredictable. You never know what to expect as someone who is spontaneous and unpredictable when it comes to playing. That’s an important part of my artistry.
The use of vibraphone is a signature element of your music. How did you become interested in the instrument, and how did it contribute to the overall sound of "Chilly Timing?" Are there any other instruments you particularly enjoy incorporating into your music?
Interestingly, you pick up on a “vibraphone” sound when in all actuality, it’s the choice of piano sounds - which most of the time is an E. Piano it Rhodes sounding pattern. E. Piano is the signature of the Neo-Soul part of my genre selection when it comes to my creative process, and normally, I will find a way to incorporate it into my music. I’ve always been a lover of a good Electric Piano sound! I love incorporating strings and horns, and of course, I love BASS - I write all my bass lines as the bass is super important in any song I write because it sets the tone rhythmically for any song I create.
What are your plans for future releases, and can you give me any insights into what fans can expect from your upcoming music?
All I can say for now is I have a couple more singles and music videos coming out this summer, and my supporters can stay tuned for Movement 2 of “Moments of Christmas” near the end of this year. I also had 2 shows earlier this month and one show coming up on March 31, which is the day after Chilly Timing drops!
