I Fight Fail Puts Contemporary Spin On A 2002 Pop-Punk Classic

Based in Canton, OH, is the talented electronic pop-rock band I Fight Fail. Independently, I Fight Fail released their debut EP “Move Me” in early 2014. After catching the attention of Standby Records, in the fall of 2016, the label released I Fight Fail's sophomore effort “Voyages & Vantage Points”. With two EPs and two music videos under their belt, they parted ways with Standby and independently released their most successful single to date, “Silhouettes,” in early 2018. I Fight Fail's electronic, space rock sound has led them to play on stages with Machine Gun Kelly, Hawthorne Heights, Red Sun Rising, Nothing More, Pop Evil, and many other notable artists.

When you're a band with members raised on early 2000’s emo/punk rock, it's only a matter of time before your rehearsal turns into a jam session of the 2002 classic, "Cute Without The E (Cut From The Team)" by Taking Back Sunday. I Fight Fail has far from created just another cover, they add their authentic flair to it and make it completely their own. The hip-hop beat and high energy pop-rock driven rhythms make this a new classic. There’s a definite nostalgic twang to the sound, though the way the melodies develop and the lyrics pour through seems far more contemporary. I Fight Fail have given "Cute Without The E" an electro-pop facelift, but still hold close the melancholic and catchy vocals we've been singing for 17 years. Fascinating for their openness and the energy they present, I Fight Fail are musically free and compelling for their unpredictability.

Welcome to BuzzMusic! How did I Fight Fail originally form?

Hey, thanks for having us! I Fight Fail was actually started from a break up of our previous band Where Are You Houston. The group at the time was torn and indifferent on where we wanted to continue taking the band. So the three of us (Andy, Anthony, and Daryl) decided to spilt ways and start something new.

How would you describe your sound and your overall approach to creating music?

Our sound is always fluctuating as most artists but right now we are writing music that has more of a darker vibe that reminisces Brand New. When we approach writing songs it tends to be different every time. Sometimes we have an idea that is written individually by one of us and then we bring it to the table and dissect it. We love writing music as much as we love performing so we always end up having all these ideas that we don’t use but every once in awhile we reference those songs and come up with something that sticks.

What do you hope your listeners take away from your cover of "Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)"?

At the end of the day we just hope that people just dig what we did with the song. It was such a big part of our adolescent years, it shaped and molded us. So we just want to do right by the song. Maybe Taking Back Sunday will even give us a thumbs up, hahah!!

What are your thoughts on mainstream music today?

We personally love mainstream music, we always try to add some of its aesthetics to whatever we are doing. If it makes you feel something then to us it’s a good song. A lot of artists like to bash mainstream music but realistically if you want to be noticed you have to be catchy.

What’s the best thing that could happen for you right now as a band?

We would love to land a major tour we’ve done a handful of tours and that’s where our heart is. Being able to perform in different cities and meeting fans that understand our music like we do is all we could ask for. Oh and having Taking Back Sunday hear and like our rendition of Cute Without The “E.”
