Interview: Get The Guided Tour Of DruiZ’s 4-Track EP

Welcome to Buzz, DruiZ! You've taken us on quite a sonic journey with your recent 4-track EP, Recordatorio I. What inspired you to create a project about the gift of life?

Thank you! This EP emerged from holding myself accountable to follow the goals I had set myself musically for the year. I wanted to create something that could be shared to make sure we constantly remind ourselves to enjoy the journey that our lifetimes are e bringing us. It is meant to inspire people to live fully and share a satisfying and meaningful experience. I hope the music lets listeners appreciate their existence and inspires growth, self-love, and self-awareness.

Which song from Recordatorio do you feel is the most impactful? Which is your personal favorite and why?

That is a tricky question, as they all feel they have a special meaning to me. I like A Donde. (Fauna) because it was a song that came to be from a random drum performance I recorded for a different project that ended up not being used. I constructed all the other parts from that performance, and the final result made me bop my head so much.

Flora (Intermission) was a beautiful exploration where I overcame some insecurities by recording my voice and also trying out the flute for the first time in a recording. And I also have to say that the lyrics and groove in Tiempo (Donde Estoy?) still give me chills, and I use them to remind myself to keep creating music from an honest place. Those lyrics came to me years ago when I felt like I needed to remember to keep my head high and feet on the ground, and when I saw that they could fit in one of the songs, I was more than happy to give them the proper meaning.

How did you create such surreal, vivid stories without a single lyric in Recordatorio I? What was your creative process like?

I think music can come from a subconscious, imaginative place; sometimes, it is essential to follow your instincts and let the ideas flow and come out. I explored different sounds and did not conform until the music and sound delivered a feeling that meant something, even when the meaning or feeling was not quite easily described.

I explored different recording techniques and tried not to be afraid to try many textures and sonic possibilities to make sure the right sounds would benefit the vibe of the music.

How would you describe the sound of Recordatorio I in terms of genres? Did you create this project with any artistic or musical influences in mind?

I could name it experimental chill groove electronic music. Some of my influences are Caribou, Dosh, Holy Fuck, Tony Allen, Mark Guliana, Ari Hoenig, Monster Rally, Medeski Martin & Wood, Surprise Chef, and Nate Smith.

How did you want listeners to feel and react to Recordatorio I? What did you want them to realize or take away after hearing it?

I would like them to feel inspired to make the most of their lives and use it as a reminder to live their best life possible, that each of our individuality is extremely important. I want the listeners to feel inspiring happiness, fulfillment, and self-love.
