Kathryn D’Costa Finds Freedom in the Growing Pains on “Deep Blue Ocean”

Southern California singer-songwriter Kathryn D’Costa captures the sweetness of youth, possibility, and romantic imagination on “Deep Blue Ocean,” the lead single from her debut EP, Coming of Age.

Released November 1, 2025, the indie-pop track emerged from a period when D’Costa was feeling the pressures of growing up. After frequently pushing herself to prove her abilities as a young songwriter, she wanted “Deep Blue Ocean” to represent something different: permission to be carefree.

That lightness gives the record its charm without sacrificing the emotional honesty central to D’Costa’s songwriting. “Deep Blue Ocean” explores wanting to mean something deeply to another person and imagining a relationship built on security, vulnerability, and unconditional love. Having never experienced a romantic relationship herself, D’Costa writes from a place of curiosity and longing, creating her own vision of what meaningful young love could feel like.

Producer Chase Jackson helps bring that vision to life through an instrumental designed to feel fresh and youthful. For D’Costa, that freshness also represents a new chapter both personally and musically. The result feels intentionally nostalgic, like being a teenager home alone, turning the music up, and dancing on your bed without worrying about what comes next.

Now 18, D’Costa is already preparing to revisit this era with Coming of Age (older and wiser), an upcoming expanded edition featuring two new songs written from a more mature perspective.
