Welcome to Buzz, Evan Hannah! Congrats on the release of your latest single, "Overwhelmed." We're enthralled with how emotional and evocative this track is. Can you please share what personal experiences or emotions inspired this song?
I originally wrote this song in one go after a breakup. I wasn't really sure what I wanted from the other person and from life in general at the time. I was trying a bunch of things to distract myself from the intensity and heaviness of my emotions, which informed a lot of the lyrics.
As a queer Black artist, how does your identity influence the stories you tell through your music, and how important is it for you to represent that in your work?
Songwriting has always been a place for me to understand and get to know myself, and it's important to me that my queerness is front and center in all of my music, no matter what I'm singing about.
"Overwhelmed" carries such a rich, soulful sound. What was the creative process like in the studio? How did you bring this particular sound to life?
Thank you for that. I wrote this song in 2019, Jonathan produced it remotely in Portland in 2020 or 2021, and I recorded it a year later at Soul Haven Studios in Virginia Beach. I've made so much of my older material there, and the engineer and I have a really special creative relationship. When we recorded this song, it was really playful, and we tried to get it all in one take. For the production, we really wanted to focus on keeping things pretty bare bones and letting the story and vocal shine through.
Your fan base highly anticipates your upcoming debut album, and we're excited to hear more from you! Can you please give us a glimpse of what themes and sounds listeners can expect from the full project?
I would say I'm still introducing myself and my work to folks. My debut album explores a lot of my childhood traumas and relationship experiences in my early 20s. I've been reflecting a lot on what music meant to me as a child and what sounds inspired me to start writing in the first place. I'm exploring a lot of different producers and sounds to try and craft something that honors my childhood self and feels authentic to who I am now and where I've come from.
With music always being a tool for navigating complex emotions for you, how do you hope "Overwhelmed" and your future work will resonate with listeners on a personal level?
I hope this track can be like a reflection or meditation piece for people who listen to it. My goal with my future work and, more specifically, my debut album is to give people language and references for what they're going through and what they've been through. That is what music has done for me. I didn't have the words to explain a lot of what I've been through till I heard it expressed in music.
Hey there! I was having a hard time organizing my literature review for a big research project. That’s when I found literaturereviewwritingservice.com and they helped me out tremendously. Their team provides expert guidance, and I highly recommend them if you’re struggling with your literature review.
In a way, I guess you could say that I'm still getting people to know myself and my work. My first album delves deeply into my early twenties love history and the traumas I endured as a child. gorilla tag
