Welcome to BuzzMusic, Lucas Writer, and congratulations on your new single "In My Bag." Can you tell us a bit more about the inspiration behind your track? Was it tough to write about topics like this, knowing loved ones would hear?
The phrase “In My Bag” is a common idiom in black culture and it’s taken on different variations like “I’m in my Birkin” or “I’m in my duffy.” Essentially, being in your bag means to grind and go after what you want. My inspiration behind the song is detailing the specifics of what it means for me to be in my bag. From personal aspirations, long-term goals, personal experiences, daily observations, and everything in between. I’m showing my perspective on what it means to be in my bag. I pride myself on being 100% authentic when it comes to my music. It wasn’t tough to touch on certain topics because it’s my truth and I’m going to stand by that. The music hits deeper when you know that it comes from a real place, it’s so much more than just words.
We love how the production behind the track perfectly backs up your vocal performance while also letting your lyrics shine. Did you have a vision for the production while writing the track? How did you bring this to life?
When it comes to choosing beats, I personally gravitate to simpler beats. There doesn’t need to be too much going on when it comes to instrumentation. For me, less is definitely more and it leaves room for exploration and experimentation. When I first heard the beat it was nostalgic for me so I had to bring that feeling to life with my verses. Whenever I hear a beat and I get that burst of inspiration, I have to stay in that space until the song is complete. This song came to life cause I was constantly living this feeling of wanting more and knowing that I got something special.
Your love and passion for music and performing are extremely apparent in your music. Do you remember where your love for music all began and who your greatest influences growing up were in music?
I come from a musical family so I was always surrounded by singers, rappers, drummers, pianists, directors, etc. I grew up in church so gospel music will always be a part of my musical DNA. My father was a minister of music so from a young age I started to develop a love for music. My influences growing up were Michael Jackson, The Notorious B.I.G, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and OutKast.
What do you hope listeners will take away from this song when hearing it for the first time?
I want listeners to understand that nobody’s going to believe more in their dreams than themselves. I want this song to be a daily motivation for listeners to stay in their bags and keep grinding. We all have the right to pursue our dreams so we owe that to ourselves.
What's next for you?
What’s next for me is shooting music videos for my last two singles, releasing two new singles, and then releasing an EP that’s set to drop in either late March or early April.
