Meena De Silva and David Laurence Capture the Magic of New Love With “MADE FROM HEAVEN”

Sri Lankan-Australian singer-songwriter Meena De Silva and Australian keyboardist David Laurence are bringing a refreshing dose of romance and feel-good energy to the music scene with their collaborative single, “MADE FROM HEAVEN.”
Blending contemporary R&B, neo-soul, and pop influences, the release celebrates the excitement of falling for someone who feels almost too good to be true, pairing heartfelt songwriting with an infectious, groove-driven musical direction.
Based in Adelaide, Meena De Silva has been steadily establishing herself within Australia's emerging music scene, performing at major cultural events including WOMADelaide and OzAsia Festival in 2025. Her expressive vocal style and classical musical background complement David Laurence's jazz-influenced approach to keyboards, creating a collaboration rooted in their shared appreciation for melody, rhythm, and musical experimentation.
“MADE FROM HEAVEN” explores the exhilarating early stages of romance, when attraction develops into something deeper and the possibilities of a lasting connection feel endless. With its warm melodic character, soulful influences, and playful romantic sentiment, the track embraces the lighter side of love without sacrificing emotional sincerity.

Originally written together in South Australia, the single also represents an important milestone for both musicians, particularly David Laurence, who makes his first official public release with the collaboration. Now based in San Francisco, David Laurence continues developing his sound while Meena De Silva prepares her second studio album, expected in 2027.
With “MADE FROM HEAVEN,” Meena De Silva and David Laurence offer listeners an uplifting reminder of how exciting falling in love can be, delivering a soulful celebration of romance that's made for getting lost in the moment.
“MADE FROM HEAVEN” captures the excitement of falling for someone who feels almost too good to be true. What inspired the song, and how did that initial idea evolve into the finished release?
Meena De Silva: I wanted to keep the topic of the song light, fun, and exciting, because the key hook that David had written felt exactly that way. Often I listen to the instrumental part, with my voice memos app recording me, shaping melodies with random words that come out. I think I started with the chorus line, singing “how did I get my whole wish list?” This sounded like it could be a love song.
Though it wasn’t inspired by anyone in particular, we’ve all been there with a crush, and it was just really fun to take off running with this idea. From here, I decided to use the verses as ways to list some cute things that could describe the situation and encapsulate the reason for the joy in the song, hoping that they’re relatable to our audience. At first, when writing lyrics, I like to flow freely, then edit afterward, so that’s how I worked here too.
I now just have thousands of voice memos on my phone from all the songs I’ve written, with lyrics that have either made it onto tracks or are a bunch of nonsense - it’s so fun to wade through them. Through this writing process, ‘MADE FROM HEAVEN’ became an ode to that warm rush of feelings you get for a new crush, and holds space for those declarations you say when you’re madly falling for someone: “I could love, I could love you a lifetime”.
Meena, your background in pop and R&B meets David's influences in jazz, neo-soul, and funk. How did your different musical perspectives shape the songwriting and production process?
Meena De Silva: David and I had our recording sessions in person, and we pieced the song together bit by bit, bringing ideas to our sessions and working through them. David nailed down the keys within our first session, and I went away with the keys recording and wrote some vocals for the verse. He added some guitar and drums, then the next session I added a chorus. Within about two sessions, I had David’s full track to bounce off of and finish my parts, so I was constantly listening and adjusting my parts.
It was mostly based on feel - “which part fits where?”, “Does this sound like a chorus?” until it all felt right. I don’t tend to intentionally think about genres when I’m writing; it’s more about what melodies fly into my head while I’m listening to a track, and how I can piece it together so it feels as though it fits just right. I’m sure these melodies are influenced by all of the musicians I listen to daily, though, like Jessie Reyez, Naïka, and Banks.
You originally created “MADE FROM HEAVEN” together in South Australia but have since navigated the release process from different countries. What has that experience taught you about collaboration, creativity, and maintaining a shared artistic vision?
David Laurence: It’s definitely taught me how important trust and communication are in collaboration. When you’re not in the same room, you can’t rely on those quick little conversations or just playing something back together and immediately knowing what feels right. You have to be a bit more deliberate about communicating what you’re hearing and what you want the song to become.
Meena De Silva: It was so great working with David Laurence; his multi-instrumental talents allowed him to really explore each part and glue together a beautiful instrumental so I could jump on and sing. He was super flexible with his process, and was as willing to listen to my ideas as I was with his. I think that’s super important when collaborating. You have to be open, talk about what you like and don’t like, but be ok with having differing opinions. And whatever those differing opinions are, it’s often not that big of a deal, and can often be fixed pretty easily.
Being absolutely stuck on having things your way is not the way to go into it. Collaborators have a way of showing you something you hadn’t thought of, in the coolest way. With ‘MADE FROM HEAVEN’ specifically, I adored the tapestry of sound that David had created, and to be honest, there was basically nothing I wanted to change; I was just excited to get my vocals onto it!
David, “MADE FROM HEAVEN” marks your first official public release. What made this collaboration the right introduction to your music, and how has the experience influenced the direction you want to explore as an artist?
David Laurence: I think this collaboration with Meena couldn't have been better for a debut track because Meena has experience through the full creative process and to releasing a track. Particularly on the release - there's the social content, artwork, distribution channels, etc to navigate... Working with someone who's been through the process helped with the momentum you need to release a track for the first time.
I love jazz, neo-soul, hip-hop, funk and a bunch of other styles, and over the next year I want to keep experimenting with different genres, production ideas and collaborations.
Meena, you're currently developing your second album with influences spanning pop, R&B, and electronic dance music. How does “MADE FROM HEAVEN” reflect your artistic growth, and what can listeners expect from this next chapter of your career?
Meena De Silva: I think a huge part of my artistic growth has been collaborating with other artists. It pushes me deep into other genres I wouldn’t have explored on my own, and it allows me to learn and pushes my songwriting to strengthen. I often love listening to different genres, so this really helps me, but being asked to write for other artists’ musical babies is a whole other beast - but one that I adore!
‘MADE FROM HEAVEN’ was its own puzzle to piece together. The song form is different to how I usually write - often I have a short intro and a chorus between every verse- and this challenged my melody writing in the best way
