Mariano Torrez is a talented artist based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He creates music under the moniker of MOSTLY EMPTY; a name that came at a time where the artist felt he had not much left to give and was willing to put it all out there to freely express himself. Using his music as an outlet for his deeply personal experiences, MOSTLY EMPTY songs evoke feelings ranging from deep anger, doubt, regret, and hopefulness.
MOSTLY EMPTY’s latest release titled “Fake Friends” works hard to set the scene for listeners. As the music plays, MOSTLY EMPTY has the authentic vocals of a performer passionately connected to this sort of expression. The song’s development works really well, the instrumentation reflects the changing moments within, as well as building gradually to become something immensely entertaining, multi-layered and totally hard-hitting. “Fake Friends” quickly becomes a song that means something powerful to those who really listen and connect with it. That hook is unforgettable once it hits, and then the latter half brings with it a slight change in pace and melody that appears as quite striking due to the effective use of contrast. There’s no limit to MOSTLY EMPTY’s versatility and creativity. His music creates an endless wave of escapism for listeners from all walks of life!

Hey Mariano! How did you get started making music? How old were you when you began writing?
I have been playing music since I was 15. Involved in different projects but never really playing anything of my own. I was always doodling around some ideas I had, but I was still afraid my thoughts were not good enough to share, so I never did. It wasn’t until last year that I decided to start writing my music. At one point, I thought I was done with music, that I was too late to start something of my own. I wasn't expecting much other than a way to cope with personal feelings and emotions I had been going through. That’s how my first single “Anxiety” was born.
What does your song “Fake Friends” mean to you? What do you hope your listeners take away from it?
This song was put together from bits and pieces of different experiences I had. It’s my personal story dealing with people I thought were friends but were just there to use me as a resource and nothing else. The chorus of the song is a reminder to myself of not wanting to be like those who treated me poorly. Interpersonal relationships are hard in general, so the main take away here is, let’s give others the same respect and treatment we want to get in return. Don’t take the word Friend or Friendship so lightly.
Where is the best setting to listen to your songs, and what do you hope people take away from them?
My songs evoke feelings experienced over multiple stages of my life, mainly lived in the past few years — all of them, ranging from deep anger, doubt, regret, and hopefulness.
The main take away with my music, in general, is to allow yourself to be free and express your emotions. We can’t control what’s going to happen next, but we should never bottle up our feelings.
What are your main aspirations as an artist going forward?
Fame and money? Just kidding!. To me is to be able to have a voice and an outlet to express myself. I want to be able to make music from real-life experiences that people can relate to. As an independent artist is hard to make yourself heard so right now, my main goal is to continue to make honest and relatable music and for people to be able to find it and connect with it.
With two successful singles out now, can we expect a longer project in the near future?
There’s a new song getting mixed as I’m writing this and more on the way. I’m hoping to be able to release my EP by the end of the fall. It’s called “To My Old Friends”. The EP is a concept, where all songs connect and carry through a story, my story. The idea behind it is "rebirth", leaving everything I knew behind and starting again.
