Formed in 2017 in Montreal, Canada, The Unfound is comprised of Alberto D’Onofrio, Benjamin Morris and brothers Jeremy and Matt Grippo. The driving rock band creates hard-hitting and powerful music for listeners from all walks of life. Brought together by a shared love of Canadian progressive giants, Rush, guitarist Alberto met drummer Jeremy and bass player Matt in early 2017. After playing through several cold winter weeks, the three had the sound they wanted, a 1970’s mix of thunderous marshall chords and big hooks. After a few fruitless auditions, the three Canadians were joined by vocalist Ben after he and Alberto were introduced completely by chance at a work function. The addition of Ben, an indie rocker and lover of 80's new wave and 90's alt-rock, made for an interesting fusion of ideas. Before long, the band’s current sound was established. With their debut single “Sooner or Later” out now, The Unfound are the ones to watch!
Throughout “Sooner or Later” The Unfound consistently showcase different sides to their creative approach. From softness to weight, calm to chaos, they utilize every element involved to craft something artistically relevant to the song’s underlying concept. “Sooner or Later” is a song that takes full advantage of contrast and builds up through its various sections in a manner that feels perfectly united to the sentiments in the writing. While that unmistakable voice is the first thing to reach out, later on it’s the switch to a partly industrial rock explosion of energy and color. There’s as much power in the instrumentation as there is in any of the lyrics or vocal inflections. The Unfound are rock and roll first and foremost; loud, chaotic and urgent, but with an underpinning of infectious melody that gets stuck in your head for days. Absolutely worth a listen, we’re looking forward to more from The Unfound!

Welcome to BuzzMusic! Congratulations on your debut single "Sooner Or Later". How would you introduce the sound, style and intention of this release?
“Sooner or Later” is our first release and we want it to serve as an introduction to the sound and style of The Unfound. The song is led by a heavy rock groove reminiscent of 70s hard rock, and also features an anthemic chorus that’s a fan favorite and always gets people signing along. Our sound can be best described by this fusion of urgent chaotic energy with infectious melody that won’t fail to get stuck in your head for days.
How do you decide what to write about and in which direction to take things as a group?
The band began with brothers Jeremy and Mathew Grippo looking for a guitarist and a singer. They eventually brought in guitar player Alberto D’Onofrio based on their shared love of Canadian prog giants Rush and other classic heavy rock bands. Singer Benjamin Morris joined after moving to Montreal from London, UK, having formerly been involved in the UK indie rock scene. The creative process which followed led to us developing our distinct sound over a number of months. We learned about each other’s creative influences and listened to a lot of music together. The result is our band’s distinctive melodic hard rock, part British and part Canadian, with a modern delivery. Although we are definitely anchored by our classic influences, we don’t want to be completely stuck in the past. We’re playing with the classic four-piece configuration and combining that huge and timeless marshal guitar sound with an exciting vocal style that completely diverts from the classic rock framework. As for the subject of our songs, we write are about people who are lost, or looking for their true identity. The narrator of “Sooner or Later” is talking to someone who once knew who they were, but has been through hell and is going to bounce back. I think we all feel lost at times, and the world is incredibly bewildering for everyone, especially young people who are just trying to find their place. Our songs are for them.
What are your thoughts on the contemporary rock music of 2019 so far?
A lot of the rock music we’ve heard this year and last year seems to be heavily retro and influenced by the classics. This was probably inevitable as rock has such an amazing pedigree with over 50 years of amazing music to draw on. As long as you’re trying to do something original, and adding your own twist on an older sound, you’re going to produce a great record.
