Sam Caldwell’s Love Gets Increasingly One-Sided On “Birthday Week”

Will his affection be reciprocated or taken for granted?

Drawing inspiration from the introspective lyricism of Elliott Smith and the raw emotion contained in the work of Phoebe Bridgers, musician Sam Caldwell’s work shines with a particular ingenuity for capturing the bittersweet essence of coming of age.

Simple yet profound, Caldwell’s lyrics are grounded in the beauty of everyday moments, transforming mundane observations into poignant reflections on guilt, heartbreak, relief, and joy. As this talented artist continues to make a name for himself, he remains one of the most exciting and emotionally stimulating talents in the scene today.

Released in July 2024, Caldwell’s album “wanderlust” showcases his eclectic taste, weaving together a rich tapestry of tones, rhythms, cultural influences, and themes. As a multi-instrumentalist, Caldwell crafts each track with meticulous attention to detail, layering harmonies and melodies until his high standards are met.

The result is an album whose soundscape is as varied as its themes, ranging from hushed acoustic ballads to lush, expansive arrangements that mirror the emotional breadth of adolescence.

Caldwell’s ability to tap into universal feelings while maintaining a distinctly personal voice makes “wanderlust” a fantastic debut. It’s even more impressive than that his release “Birthday Week” still manages to stand out, even amongst an incredibly strong supporting cast. Soft, gentle instrumentals ease you into Caldwell’s mellow soundscapes.

From the moment Caldwell opens with the words, “Said the words you wanted me to say, I feel the silences today / I hope its worth your peace of mind to have taken some of mine”, you get the sense that “Birthday Week” is both an incredibly intimate and captivating release.

With “wanderlust” and “Birthday Week”, Sam Caldwell invites listeners to relive their own youthful experiences through his tastefully crafted narratives, leaving a lasting impact that lingers long after the final note fades.

Welcome to Buzz, Sam Caldwell! We loved “Birthday Week”, we had to ask! What was the inspiration behind this release? You usually incorporate a lot of personal experience into your songs right?

Thanks for having me! Yeah, “birthday week” was inspired by that feeling we get in our gut around our birthdays when we decide if we want to reach out to someone or not. This song specifically was about that struggle with an ex but it's just as real with an old friend. Sometimes it feels like “hey if I don’t reach out now we’ll probably never talk again.” I think the song is really about that intangible thing that tells us if we're ready to lose that relationship with someone or not.

What’s your biggest source of motivation when you make your music, and as an extension of that, what does music mean to you?

Easily connecting with people! My favorite thing is after a show if someone comes up and says “I’m actually going through a similar thing right now…” and then suddenly they feel comfortable enough to unload on a complete stranger. It's a pretty magical experience and I hope to write in a way that encourages more of that. For me, it reminds me that we’re all just people at the end of the day and all just want to be included, loved, and cared for.

What was your favorite part of bringing the vision for “wanderlust” to life, and other than “Birthday Week”, what’s your favorite song from the project?

My favorite part of the project was probably that it all happened right when I moved to LA. As soon as I unpacked, I started working with so many amazing people to bring the album to life. Other than “birthday week,” one of my favorite tracks is called “beacon street”. It’s just a cute little outro track about being okay with where you’re at. It makes me feel like I'm about to go on vacation in the 90’s wearing a cheesy Hawaiian shirt and listening to my Walkman.

What inspired you to take that initial step to start pursuing music seriously, and what motivates you to make music now?

This question is always really hard for me. I don’t know if there was a moment where I consciously was like “okay i'm going into music now." It's just something I always knew I was going to do since I first started playing piano in preschool. The thing that motivates me now is just being a part of my community and traveling the world. It’s pretty incredible the amount of amazing individuals I’ve met all across the globe just thanks to this profession.

What’s next for Sam Caldwell, and is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?

What's next! More music of course! I’m currently working on an EP that I’m really proud of. It’s a lot more relaxed and is a better representation of where I’m at right now. Thanks for listening y’all, love you guys!
