This is the first song I wrote and composed on this album. At that point in my life, I was very angry at climate inaction. I didn't understand why nothing was done to switch to another paradigm. I needed to exorcise my fears by writing. Rebellion talks about all my fears. The fear of seeing our world collapse. Your music video for "Rebellion" is visually stunning and very symbolic. What message did you hope to convey through the visuals? I just wanted to show what touched me today. My need to see our society really transform. Deeply. It's kind of a message of hope even if the point may seem harsh at first. How does "Rebellion" set the tone for your latest album of the same name? What can listeners expect from the rest of the project? I chose to call my album Rebellion because I started writing it in a very tumultuous period of my life. I was losing my bearings. I wanted to become a mother, but it didn't happen. I felt a lot of sadness at that time. It is the strength of music, it can make it possible to exorcise our fears, our fragilities. This album brings together all these themes. Motherhood, femininity, anger, loss of confidence, metamorphosis. What was your songwriting process for "Rebellion," and what moments or experiences did you draw from to write it? The production of this album was done over several years. And in different places as well. I started writing it in Montreal in the spring of 2016. I had taken a small recording studio with me. I continued to write in Brighton, it was there that I ended up getting pregnant. To finish his writing in my house in the Alps. It's an album that tells all my personal quest. What do you hope listeners take away from "Rebellion?" How do you want the song to inspire or impact them? I hope people will feel my whole emotional journey. I think I didn't hide behind a mask on this album. I was able to speak in the most authentic way possible by not being afraid to address rather dark themes such as the collapse. Stepping into a club at a time when you are still figuring yourself out is such a powerful moment in your life. The anticipation before the first time you dance with a stranger is almost as indescribable as the feeling when it finally happens. “Friction” is a song that captures that electric moment, especially as so many of us still struggle to freely share ourselves with others. I wanted to create something sensual and fun for people to enjoy this summer to remind us all of that joy. How does "Friction" represent you as an artist? This song really showcases my sentimental side. “Friction” falls in the cooler range of the Nuépa sound, so I wrote softer rap vocals to bridge the vulnerable singing moments to the softer, more intimate hook. This track really represents my approach to intimacy in music: smooth, reflective, and sexy. How does it showcase your unique style, sound, and blend of genres/influences? I always like to lean into a different genre when I make new music. I enjoy so many different sounds, so I tend to incorporate styles and samples that I’m feeling at that moment. We’ve been having a major renaissance of classic house music in the last few years. While I’ve flirted with that genre in songs like “Bicycle” and “In You,” I wanted to serve warm vocals over a cool house instrumental to showcase another way in which house can be blended. That being said, some of my best tracks are raunchy, no-limits sex anthems, while others are softer, introspective bops. I like to think “Friction” falls somewhat in the middle. Can you tell us about the recording process for "Friction" and what it was like working with producer Owen Puckett and engineer Christopher Crear? “Friction” was produced and recorded with Owen P (Producer OP) at Secret Weapon Sound over the past year. We spent many sessions perfecting it, but the actual structure and vocals in the song were completed very early on. Owen is incredibly open-minded and collaborative - he’s one of the few producer-engineers you can build something from the ground up with. He took a vibe and gave it musicality in a way that blended our creative touches into something wholly unique. I’m lucky to have known Chris from his work on mastering my previous singles. Chris is a veteran engineer at the renowned MetalWorks Studios in Mississauga, Ontario. He’s worked with some of the biggest artists in the world, including our own Canadian-grown music giants. With the immaculate production that OP did on the track, I knew “Friction” deserved nothing less than the best possible master, which is why I reached out to Chris to help complete this very special single. "Friction" is the first single from your upcoming debut EP of the same name. What can fans expect from the rest of the project, and how does this track set the tone? “Friction” is just a taste of what’s in the EP. The first step. If this single is dipping your toe in the water, the rest of my EP will drown you in unapologetically queer love, sex, and jubilation. I love when a record takes you on a journey, so be prepared to experience a full story and some surprising features on the “Friction” EP. I am incredibly proud to be able to share my growth as an artist with my fans, and the selection of sounds I’ve put together will leave anyone who listens hooked by the first bar. As a Queer Nonbinary artist, how important is it for you to explore themes of identity, sexuality, and mental health through your music, and how do you approach incorporating these topics into your songs? As an artist, music is my relationship between emotion and the world around me. My identity is a coalescence of many things, including my experiences as a queer, neurodivergent person. Exploring these themes is why I make music. When I was growing up, I didn’t have role models to whom I could relate. I always felt like I wasn’t enough for those around me. As I discovered my queerness, I began to realize how sexuality and mental health intersect – they are inseparable. The themes I explore in my music are a reaction to those intersections…like how I feel certain topics should be approached. As always, the artist’s perspective will be embedded in the music, but there will also be the listener. When I write, I try to be exceedingly personal with my sentiments while still leaving room in the lyrics for the listener to find themselves in the song's messages. Visibility is extremely important, however I think we often overlook the necessity of the tools that can facilitate that visibility for others. I explore my personal experiences in a way that (hopefully) allows those who listen to imprint their context on the music to feel a deep sense of ownership and visibility in relating to their own identities. "Bandit" was written by Amanda Couture, Dan Botch, and Garrett Ward, and I was instantly captivated when my producers (Dan and Garrett) brought me the song. I was so honored that they showed me this song because I knew it was special. I loved the story behind the song about want and desire. I felt the writers did a fantastic job to captivate the theme of desire by using cheeky lines like "steal your heart, like a Bandit" along with the lyrics. The melody has this haunting and mysterious overall vibe to the song that helps paint the picture for the listeners. I connected with the music so much that as soon as I heard it, I immediately messaged Dan and Garrett asking when we could get production going and when I could come in and start singing vocals! How does "Bandit" showcase your growth as an artist compared to your earlier releases? “Bandit” is my fourth release; comparing this song to my first, I can tell there is growth in my vocal delivery and connection to the music. With “Bandit,” I can hear how intentional I was while singing. I can also hear how much my confidence and comfort in the studio have grown. “Bandit” also offered a lot of creativity and challenge. This song, in particular, is super special as I sing all the harmonies behind my vocals. Singing harmonies on this song was one of my favorite parts of recording. I loved the haunting atmosphere created with all the layers of my voice, which, in turn, helped enhance the song. The music video for "Bandit" is beautiful in its simplicity. What was your vision for bringing this song to life visually? While creating “Bandit,” we kept in mind the idea of simplicity. I wanted the main focus to be on me while filming so the viewer could see how I connected to the song. I kept envisioning myself being free in various landscapes while singing. Max did a great job captivating so many memorable moments. Before filming, we discussed this. I also sent him a bunch of references from other artists, including the color, texture, angles, time of day, and different landscapes. The whole process was new, fun, and exciting! Your journey in music has had some challenges. How has overcoming those obstacles influenced your songwriting? The challenges have helped me grow as a person. I have always been reflective, but ever since my accident, I have been more patient with myself and my music. I am also more intentional about what I want to say with my music and how I spend my time. Last but not least, I am super grateful for the outlook on life that previous challenges gave me. Was someone special the inspiration for this release? What was the creative process like for this release? Hi, thanks for having me! Yeah, the main inspiration for the song was about someone who I had feelings for but could never express to them just due to life's timing. Then, when the chance came to reconnect with this person, I reached out, just somewhat testing the waters, but it became pretty clear through their delay and lack of responses that they weren't into me. This was just my way of working all these emotions out of my system, and I really just wanted to channel all that through a bedroom pop-type song. Once it was finished, it all came together for me in terms of my vision for the cover art I wanted to use. What’s been your favorite music-related memory so far? Honestly, all the positive feedback I've received around this song has been my best memory to date. I remember when I first shared the dry recording with my mixing engineer. He immediately texted me back, saying he thought this song could be special, and he definitely took it to that level. I've worked with him for a while now, and that was the first time he's really expressed that to me about any song we've done. I feel it's our best work so far. What goals do you want to achieve with your music this year? I really just want to reach more people but, more than anything, continue to grow in my sound with the music that I make. Anyone who's listened to songs I've made before, "Miss Lee," knows that this is a pretty big shift in tone for me, and right now, I'm eager to continue playing around in this sonic pocket. It's not often that you get pirates, monkeys, monsters, and outer space travel in the same music video, but Slack Tide has delivered that and more with their latest release, "The Adventures of Captain Gnarly." The song dips its toes in the shallow end of the band's reggae beach roots, then switches to the deep end of their psychedelic jam band style. Imagine, if you will, Jack Johnson joining the band Phish. It's anything but normal, which is exactly why it's so worth your time. Beginning on the high seas, we meet "Captain Gnarly and his gang of rascals and thieves." The delightfully colorful cast of characters are out sailing and enjoying their grog. The video has an engaging visual aesthetic, similar to South Park, with extra grit. The music is simple and fun with a tongue-in-cheek reggae groove. Everything changes once a giant sea beast appears in the fog. The video takes a darker turn. So does the music, growing bolder and more intense as the battle ensues. Once the pirates emerge victorious, the music enters its psychedelic stage. The music swells under a mind-bending guitar solo while the pirate's ship sprouts engines and blasts off into outer space. Wow. Just wow. The song boasts a tasty blend of genres not typically used together, staying very much in Slack Tide's signature style. The band has been consistently touring for almost a decade. Their live shows have become recognized as a truly unique sound in the New England jam scene. Slack Tide has received multiple nominations from the New England Music Awards and played almost 300 shows in New England alone. They have multiple singles and an EP (Sea Rat Red) online to stream.
